Hello everyone. I am new to this forum so please bear with me My name is Lana. I live in the USA (NYC area) and I am searching for information about my Ukrainian ancestors & any family I may still have over there.

My grandfather Wasyl Sawran and my grandmother Sophie Burbella came through Ellis Island-USA. I am working from 2 ship manifests, newspaper obituaries and the info that my grandmother told me before she passed away.

SAWRAN FAMILY
Jan and Andrew Sawran came from Bobrka, Ukraine.
Andrew immigrated to USA with his wife Mary Ferenczak. He settled in Oxford NJ with their 8 children. Jan was married to Mary Polockowitz, but was a widower with 5 children by the 1920s. He remained behind in Ukraine.

Wasyl Sawran (Jan's son/my grandfather) arrived on the ship Estonia at age 24 in 1922 having come from Choderckowa, Bobrka, Poland according to the manifest. Brought over by his Uncle Andrew Sawran who settled in Oxford NJ. Wasyl settled in Bayonne, NJ. He came to USA with his sister Anna (in reality his underage sis Katie) and later brought his brother Pete. His father Jan Sawran and sisters Anna Sawran-Kaminenski & Sophie Sawran (ill-never married) remained behind in Ukraine. I do not know if there were any other brothers to Jan and Andrew Sawran and I do not know their parents' names.

BURBELLA FAMILY
My great-grandparents: Andrew and Anna Burbella were married in St.Mary's Church of the Assumption in Bakiwchi, Ukraine on November 9, 1897. Andrew Burbella arrived in USA approx 1903 at age 40. He brought over his wife Anna Sahuta-Burbella and 2 daughters: Mary and Sophie (my grandmother). They arrived on the Vaderland ship in 1907. Sophie was aged 2 and listed as "Bourza Burbella" - according to manifest they lived in Barkovic, Austria and were all born in Bobrka, Galicz.
The Burbellas lived the rest of their lives in Bayonne, NJ and had 2 more children: sons John and William.

Anna Sahuta-Burbella had a sister Evdokia Sahuta-Polockowitz. Their parents were John & Martha Sahuta. Evdokia Sahuta married Wasyl Polockowitz --who happened to be brother to Mary Polockowitz Sawran (see above). I do not know their parents' names. (I guess it was slim pickens in those small Ukrainian villages -- I appear in two different branches of my family tree!)

From my grandmother I was told:
She & my grandfather were born in a town called HO-DER-Q-CHEE (phonetically spelled) BO-BRICK-A in Ukraine. I have just found a town called CHODORKIVCI in the Bibrka region of Ukraine! This could possibly be the correct village!

I have learned that the western area of Ukraine (Lvov etc) changed hands politically several times and it was part of Poland, Austria, etc and known as Galicz and Galicia at different times. So I am working with the village names. I can't seem to locate Choderckowa or Bakiwchi on a map though.

Does anyone know of these villages? Or of Sawrans, Burbellas, Kaminenskis, Polockowitz or Sahutas from that area?

Any information would be much appreciated!

Thank you in advance,
Lana Abbott

Hi Lana,

Both villages, Khodorkivtsi and Bakivtsi, are now located in Zydachiv district of Lviv region. Zip code of Bakivtsi is 81712, and Hodorkivtsi does not have its own zip, so most probably its current population is below 500 people.
Khodorkivtsi are located directly to the South from Bibrka, at the road that goes from Bibrka to Novyj Rozdil. It follows from the map that distance from Bibrka to Khodorkivtsi is just 10-15 kilometers.
Then Bakivtsi are located also around 10 kilometers from Khodorkivtsi to the South-East, near the road that goes through Khodorkivtsi to Novi Strilyscha.
You may check the location also from the following link (put Bobrka instead of Bibrka in search):

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp...submit=Get+Map

You see there Bibrka marked with star, and Khodorkivtsi (Hodorkivtsi) are below it just after village Lany (very close name to your first name).

My hometown is Rozdil (5 kilometers from Novyj Rozdil), and it is comparatively close to your villages, but I never was there.

Good luck,
Vitaliy
