I'm new to the website and am not sure how it works. However, I’m looking for Welyczko relatives. My grandfather, William Philip Welyczko, son of Simion Welyczko & Anna nee Rymar, was born on Rohatyn Ukraine in 1881, immigrated to the U.S. in 1908. My grandmother, Mary (Marya) Duchnij immigrated in 1912 from "Buszawza Russia." I can't find any such town. Need to find some Welyczko's from the area, and any Duchnij's. Also would like to find the town of Buszawza. Can you point me in any direction?

As per Ellis Island Records, Grandfather's immigration record was a bit mangled. He is listed as FILIP WETYCZKO.
If you take a close look at the ORIGINAL SHIP MANIFEST you will see his surname was Welyczko. His father's name was Semko (nickname for Simion or Semion). He arrived in USA January 8, 1909. Now I need to locate Batsrowce, which is probably a village in Rohatyn District of Ivano-Frankivska Region. Immigrants frequently referred to their district center as place of origin for geographical reference, because their own villages were small.

Do you have any documentation for Grandfather? How do you know he fared from Rohatyn? Where were Grandparents married?

Grandmother was from Russia Poland??? We need to find Buszawza, probably Poland today???

I just realized that there is a possible discrepancy between these two Filips. If you Philip were born in 1891, we would have a fit. Let's take a look at his Social Security.

PS>The Welyczko clan was Hutsul.

<my grandmother, Ellis Island record shows Marya Duchnij came from Buszawza Russia.>

In another part of the record where
name of her father is shown, the name of the town appears as Buszawa. After Buszawa it is not clear whether Gal or Gub is written????

Could it be Bychawa>Lublin???

There were many Ukrainians living in this general area/Lublin, Chelm & Biala Podlaska. In 1912 this was a part of Russia Poland.

I will take another look tomorrow.

Parish in Bolszowei

Your Grandfather was from Bilshivtsi (or possibly nearby Bovshiv)? Over the yrs district borders have changed some and today your ancestral selo/village is in Halych District>Ivano-Frankivska Region. In the 11th/12th centuries, Halych was the capital of the Halychyna/Galicia- Vohlyn Kingdom.

I suspect that your Grandfather and Julianne's (on this forum) Welyczko are related??? Her Welyczko immigrated to Canada. You and she are probably distant cousins???

Do you have the names of Grandfather's siblings?

PS> I think Welyczko means someone who is somewhat big.

Hi Hannia:

You wrote the following in a previous post:

PS>The Welyczko clan was Hutsul.

Can you explain what you mean by that?

Thanks!

To this day the Hutsuls are a proud, resourceful and passionately independent micro-ethnic group of Ruthenians. There is a wonderful riotous quality about them. It is in their nature to laugh and sing and stomp their feet when dancing.

And they can carve magic from a piece of wood.

Look at segment five. You may have to download a better viewing program or you can order the tape from Kontakt. Scroll all the way down for instructions. The Ukrainian President was present at the Hutsul Festival and officiated at the museum and train station openings. You may not understand the language, but the music is terrific and the people are beautiful.

PS> I will get in touch w/Carol for you and have her get in touch w/u by E-Mail.
