Looking for Hungarian relatives in old Kiralyhaza, now in the Ukraine called Korolevo Zakarpatskaya
I would like you to give me some information on researching my Bilcze ancestors. They came from the old Ugosca county of AH from a village called Kiralyhaza and Kralovo nad Tisou. My grandfather Mihaly Bilcze stated upon arrival in the US that he was from Verocze, Hungary (may be misspelled). Birthdate 1882-84 According to a map, Verocze and Kiralyhaza are very close in location. Kiralyhaza is now in the Ukraine called Korolevo Zakarpatskaya 23.8 longitude and 48.9 latitude. Korolevo is 7km from Vinogradov, 47km from Mukachevo and 202km from Lvov. My grandfathers father was head of the train station and his brother Janos was an officer in the military. They were of Orthodox or Greek Catholic faith. They were a well off family. Can you help me with this search? Do you have phone directory or church records of Korolevo Zakarpatskaya? Nothing comes up on any search engine "Bilcze". Could the name be misspelled?Maybe Bilche. Let me know if you can come upon any Bilcze info or let me know if any of your associates can help. I am willing to pay reasonable fees for information. It is a great pleasure to post here. |

Joseph,
Although the history throughout this area is fascinating, researching genealogy in this region is extremely tough. ___________________________________________________________________________ This is a very interesting link for anyone w/ancestors from Carpathian Mountain Region. The oldest human remains in Ukraine and Central Europe were found near Korolevo in Vynohradiv district and date back 1 million years. http://www.zakarpattja.westportal.net/eng/5.html ___________________________________________________________________________ As per Ellis Island, Mihaly was listed as Hungarian, but for me the surname rings Carpatho-Rusyn (not Russian, RUE-SEEN)??? In perusing records, this looks to be Mihaly's 2nd trip to USA. In 1905 Laszlo (16yrs old) is recording as heading to Alliance to meet up w/his brother, Mihaly Bilcze??? Janos too might have also made a trip to USA??? Mihaly, ethnically a Magyar, was born in 1882. His records are most likely in the illusive STATE ARCHIVES OF THE ZAKARPATSKA REGION in Berehove/frequently referred to as Berehove Archives. This is where the records (for up until 1946), when area was under domain of other countries than Ukraine, are kept. You are looking for records in this area, when it was Hungary>Austro Hungarian Empire. This specific mythical polity was called the Kingdom of Hungary. You need to get in touch w/Louis Schonfeld, who has some exc connections in Berehove. He is the former President of Hungarian SIG (Jewish Genealogy) and there are few more knowledgeable than he re this region and he generously shares that knowledge. His help is nonsectarian. There is a nominal charge per surname, which he passes on to his researchers in Ukraine. Louis Schonfeld's E-mail = ischon@adelphia.net ____________________________________________________________________________ Korolevo is a fair size town today>Vynohradivskij Raion/District>Zakarpatska Oblast/Region zip 90332-335 Verocze on the other hand is still a small village, today called Veryatsya>also in the Vynohradivskij Raion>Zakarpatska Oblast. Why not write the Veryatsya Village Administrator and inquiry re any surviving family still residing there. Although there are distinctly Hungarian enclaves throughout the Vynohrad district, I suggest using Ukrainian for correspondence. Vitalij, an Economics Scholar @ Brandeis and a member here, charges very fair fees for such correspondence. vivandr@brandeis.edu Holovi Silskoji Rady selo Veryatsya Vynohradivskij Raion Zakarpatska Oblast UA 90336 Family in Veryatsya might be able to connect you to family in Koroleva??? Be careful. Times are difficult in this part of the world and you do not want to acquire family that may not be your own. Let us know how things work out. We are all rooting for you. Hannia,
Many thanks for prompt reply. I wish I could thank you in person. The referenced article w/a comment from Mykola Bilcze in Korolevo is the first time I seen anything refering to Bilcze surname in Korolevo. There is hope that the Bilcze surname does indeed exhist and relatives still live there. I wish I could translate. Bilcze surname rings Carpatho-Rusyn has been communicated to me by others on the net. However, Hungarian was the language spoken by my grandparents and other relatives in US. My cousin thinks grandfathers mother was Ukranian. In perusing records, this looks to be Mihaly's 2nd trip to USA. In 1905 Laszlo (16yrs old) is recording as heading to Alliance to meet up w/his brother, Mihaly Bilcze??? Yes, he settled in Alliance, OH and married a hungarian lady from Saros. Janos too might have also made a trip to USA??? He didn't, may have visited, was in military and may have been killed in war. Was Mhaly and Laszlo brother. Will get in touch w/Louis Schonfeld, former President of Hungarian SIG (Jewish Genealogy) Will write the Veryatsya Village Administrator and inquiry re any surviving family still residing there. Family in Veryatsya might be able to connect me to family in Koroleva I have been contacted by Ivan and Nina Bilche, not part of family but after money. I know times are difficult in this part of the world. Joe |
