Hello,
My great-grandparents were Ukrainian and I am trying locate their birthplaces. G-grandfather born 1883 in "Liwcze, Sokal, East Galicia" G-grandmother born 1889 in "Dobrochyn, Austria" I know that a birthplace that is listed as Austria in 1889 could actually mean Austrian-occupied Galicia and I believe there is a selo called Dobrochyn in Sokal. Am I correct in thinking that the birthplaces are actually: -Liwcze (selo/village), Sokal (raion/district), Lviv (oblast/region), Galicia -Dobrochyn (selo/village), Sokal (raion/district), Lviv (oblast/region), Galicia |

Today selo/village, Dobryachyn>Sokalskij Raion/District>Lvivska Oblast/Region>Ukraine,
abbr UA, latest zip code 80053. At turn of century this was/is Halychyna/Eastern Galicia>administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Genealogy of Halychyna and Eastern Galicia http://www.halgal.com/ Village, LIWCE (coordinates 50.30-24.02) is 10.5 miles WNW of Doryachyn (coordinates 50.25-24.14), however it IS IN POLAND TODAY. Liwcze>Dolhobyczow Gmina/District>Hrubieszow Powiat/County>Lublin Region/Lubelskie Wojiwodstwo? At the turn of the century, this too was Galicia>Austro-Hungarian Empire. (From late 18th century to appx 1919, there was no such geopolitical entity as Poland.) Very thorough link re maps & archives. Lubelskie Geneaology Web http://www.rootsweb.com/~pollubel/ __________________________________________________________________________ There is a good possibility that any surviving family from Liwcze is now living somewhere in Ukraine ??? In 1947 most Ukrainians living in what is Poland today were resettled in either the Northern Region of what is Poland today or in the Soviet Union. allRefer Reference - Poland - Ukrainians and Belarusians | Polish Information Resource http://reference.allrefer.com/countr.../poland81.html If looking for surviving relatives, I would start with the Ukrainian side of the border and write the Village Administrator in Dobryachyn. Holovi Silskoji Rady selo Dobryachyn Sokalskij Raion Lvivska Oblast UA 80053 PS>Communicating in Ukrainian is ideal. [Edited by Hannia on 30th January 2004 at 10:39] |

Thank you so much Hannia! I could see from other posts that you were very knowledgeable but I didn't know that you were able to read minds as well. I was wondering what the distance was between the selos of Dobryachyn and Liwcze and you told me without my having to ask.
Thanks again. |

I have been giving some thought to how to locate your family from the Poland side of border.
Make contact w/surviving relatives on Ukraine side and ask them how easy it might be for them to travel to Poland side and make some inquiries re Liwce relatives??? Most border Ukrainians are bilingual, speaking Ukrainian and Polish. If not successful using that tact, contacting various Ukrainian orgs in Poland might be the next step. You'll have to get creative. According to article (only 7 yrs old) below, there are some 15,000 resettled Ukrainians living in Koszalin District in Northern Poland. They have their own newspaper. How expensive could it be running an ad in this paper and inquiring what happened to Liwce residents??? Poland's Ukrainians have few expectations regarding second World Forum of Ukrainians (08/24/97) http://www.ukrweekly.com/Archive/1997/349702.shtml |
