I have been told that the village once named Luka, located approximately 13 miles east of Sambor is now known as Ozerne (suppposedly renamed sometime after WWII). Does anyone have any knowlege of this area and whether the name change of this village is correct. I would like very much to contact village mayor for this village and also the village of Dublany which is about 4 miles from Luka. Any help with current postal codes for either of these villages would be very much appreciated. Researching surnames: Tchaikivski/Czajkowski; Horodyski; Czolowski/Czulowski; Vinicki/Winnicki; Bandrowski and many others from these villages.

Hi Darlene,
In Sambir district there is still village called Luky, I am not sure if it is the same village that you asked. Its address is selo Luky Sambir rayon Lviv oblast Ukraine 81435 Village Ozerne is located very close to Dubliany. Adress: selo Ozerne Sambir rayon Lviv oblast' Ukraine 81472 Dubliany is comparatively big town, I am not sure if writing letter to its mayor may help. Because of its size it has two zip codes: 81470 and 81471. But for smaller villages it may work. Luky is approximately at the same distance from Sambir as Ozerne is. Luky is situated at the auto road that goes from Lviv to Sambir, almost after town Rudky. I remember that when you pass Rudky in your way to Sambir there are many big lakes in the righ hand side of the road. So actually village Luky has many lakes (ozer in Ukrainian). Could it be that village was called Ozerne (or something similar previously) and then was renaimed to Luky? Good luck, Vitaliy vivandr@brandeis.edu |

Thank you Vitaliy for your reply to my inquiry and the postal codes for Ozerne and Dublany/Dubliany you furnished me.
You asked if I might mean the village of Luky and not Luka. At this point I am not really sure. I had originally been told the name of the village was Laka and that is what appeared on passenger lists of my families when they immigrated. I was fairly recently told by another researcher ( a young gentleman whose father was born in that village and now lives in Lviv)that the correct name of the village was Luka and was changed to Ozerne sometime after WWII. This gentleman said that when he was younger he had visited the village to see his grandparents (Tokarski's), his great grandfather (Ivan Veselovski) having been "viyt" (the head of the municipality of Luka in the 1930's). Since he was also familiar with the villages of Bilyna/Bilina, Dublany and Tatary that are quite close by I was pretty sure that he was referring to the same Luka or Laka. You mentioned that Dublany/Dubliany was a fairly large town. From what little I had been able to learn, I had thought it was a small village. I do know that there is another village Dublany somewhere north of Lviv and from what I am able to find this is a larger area. Would you know if that is the case and if that Dublany is where the agricultural college is located? Again, thank you very much for your reply, it is very much appreciated for I am determined to make contact with some of my ancestral villages/towns to seek further information on my family lines. Hi Darlene,
Yes, I was first under impression that Dubliany in Sambir district was a location for Agricultural Academy but it is not. Lviv state agricultural academy is located in town Dubliany that is in Zovkva district, and it is actually a town. Dubliany in Sambir region is called “selysche” or “selysche mis’kogo typu”. It is the name for small town, which is not a town yet but already not a village also. Normally such location would have a few industrial enterprises, and population that is bigger then in average village. My hometown Rozdil is also selysche. I wrote in my previous post "town" Dubliany because it is not common for village to have two zip codes. At the following web page I found mentioning about Dubliany: http://www.forst.tu-dresden.de/Zoolo...raeume/MR.html that states: Ñåëî Äóáëÿíè … çíàõîäèòüñÿ áëèçüêî 15 êì íà ñõ³ä â³ä ðàéöåíòðó ì. Ñàìá³ð. Âîíî ëåæèòü íà ðè´åë³ ì³æ ð³÷êàìè Äí³ñòåð ³ Áèñòðèöÿ ç ï³âí³÷íî-ñõ³äíîãî êðàþ Äðîãîáèöüêî¿ âèñî÷èíè. Ñåëî íàë³÷óº 2246 æèòåë³â, 840 ç ÿêèõ çàéíÿò³ â íàðîäíîìó ãîñïîäàðñòâ³. Á³ëüø³ñòü æèòåë³âì ïðàöþº ó ì³ñòàõ Ñàìá³ð, Äðîãîáè÷ ³ Òðóñêàâåöü, ùî çíàõîäÿòüñÿ íåïîäàë³ê. In short it says that Dubliany is 15 kilometers from Sambir, and has 2246 inhabitants. Short description of Sambir district can be found at: http://www.loda.gov.ua/region/structure/sambir/ Concerning the village Ozerne, I think that if that researcher has family in the village than he probably knows exactly how the village was called previously. It is really very hard to find information about Ukrainian villages in Internet. So if you have a contact with the person from the village he is probably the best choice to make the inquiries on your behalf there. Good luck, Vitaliy |
