Hi all!
I was cusrious if anyone was familiar with the BLATT surname. According to oral family history, my grandparents were from Kiev, but the name they took in the US which was BLATT, was not their name in Ukraine. It was rumored that it was taken from a lumber or paper making factory in the area. Does this make sense to anyone? Thanks, Guy |

The surname of Blatt was in existance in most Eastern European countries at the turn of the century (1900) actually Ellis Island has over 500 Blatts comming from countries like Russia, Poland, Rumania, Austria, Galicia, Latvia etc. It may have been of Jewish or German origin, suggest you contact appropriate Message Boards for origin of the surname. They are jewish, but I am sure their name was not Blatt until they came to the US. That is why I was curious about the paper/lumber business. Maybe the company had the name Blatt in it.

There is an online list of businesses & business owners in Kievskaya (Kiev) gubernia/region > Czarist Russia at the turn of the century. You will have to sign up @Jewishgenforum and create a password for yourself. There is also one for 1913. I am just not sure whether it is available online.
