I have a question for you who are familiar with Ukrainian villages and the spelling of village names. In my research, I have used EllisIsland.org frequently. When I searched for Bombyk, I found my grandfather, Matviy, my grandmother, Maria, and my Uncle Bill (Vasil). There is also a Michal Bombyk who came through Ellis Island in 1909 and again in 1913. The ship manifest says he is from Dxieduscyk. Could this be Velyki Didushychi? If this is the case, then I have been corresponding with a family of Bombyks in Lanivka who are originally from Velyki Didushychi. When I searched for Bombyk on Ancestry.com, I found 2 Bombyk families, mine, and another. The age and the immigration dates of the Mike Bombyk in the 1930 census matched the age and immigratation dates of the Michal Bombyk I found on EllisIsland.org. The point of all this? Well, there are 2 families of Bombyks in the US. Mine and another. I think we're related, but we haven't made the connection...yet. I've confirmed with the other Bombyk family that they think this Mike/Michal Bombyk is indeed their grandfather. So, I'm thinking I should put this family of Bombyks in touch with the family of Bombyks I found in Ukraine. What do ya'll think?

Becki,
Don't do anything yet. I have some info re Mihajlo Bombyk, which might be useful, but don't have the time to go into any detail now. BUT WILL IN THE NEXT WEEK. I am still trying to complete budget for the yr. The deadline for completion is this coming Friday and my head is spinning. |

Advice
I'm wondering what ya'll think about me searching for alternate spellings of the name Bombyk. The name was not changed when my grandfather came through Ellis Island. I'm wondering if other Bombyks came through and the spelling DID get change. What do you all think? Thanks!

Hello Becki,
How is everything going? I am so glad spring is here. ______________________________________________________ I submitted BOMB and BOMBYK in STARTS WITH. Nothing came up. I suspect that what was meant by THE NAME WAS CHANGED has to do with the surname's transliteration from Cyrillic Alphabet to Latin Alphabet. Ukrainian Transliteration Table http://pages.prodigy.net/l.hodges/translit.htm Use link below to play w/name possibilities. SOUNDS LIKE provides widest list. Make sure to check gender, using dates 1900-1914 (greatest immigration period). Do not use any given names. ALSO under ethnicity click off Austria, Galicia, Ruthenian & Polish. Searching Ellis Island Database in One Step http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/ellis.html _______________________________________________________ |
