Hello,

My great-grandparents were from Koretz, which I believe was in Ukraine. They came to America in 1905.
Original name was Skoletsky, some became Skol, others became Cohen.

Does anyone know if the town survives? I heard it was destroyed in World War II.

Are there any records for this area?

Than you.

Michael Cohen
USA.

Hello Michael, Welcome. How positive are you on spelling of surname? Have you found them coming thru Ellis Island? What is family oral history? I found a spelling Skuletzky from Koretz in Russia coming thru in 1910. Entire family. They were Hebrew. Any chance this is your family? There are alot of records available out there, just need to clarify these few things.

thank you for the information

So the town itself has been replaced with a new city?

I believe my family did not enter via Ellis Island, but through Boston.

Other family members have found records of this. I am trying to learn about the region they are from, and although a long shot, see about relatives more than 3 generations back.

Are there any records of those who lived in Korets, such as cemetary records?

Obviously recordkeeping was not a high priority when the Jews were being hunted.

Thanks to all.

Rose-Skoletsky
Skoletsky from Koretz, Russia

Hi Michael,
I was just searching for my son re: Koretz, Russia and I came accross your posting. I have been trying to find out more information about my family. My family name is also Skoletsky, my grandmother, her nine brothers and their parents (my great grandparents) all came over from Koretz, Russia about 1905. My great grandparents names were Joseph (Yosel - hebrew name) and Anna (Chanah - hebrew name)Skoletsky. They brought over their only daughter (my nanny) Helen and 9 of her brothers. Two other brothers were born in this country. They all settled in Hartford, Connecticut. Some of her brothers names were Leo, Sam, Morris and Frankie. If any of this information sounds familiar to you, please send reply and I can give you so much more information. Just to let you know they did come over through Ellis Island. Unfortunately, they did not keep accurate records during those years. I was able to find accurate records during the 1913 when my grandfather came from Kiev, Russia.

Smile Skoletsky-Koretz, Ukraine

Heidi Rose and Michael Cohen,

We are indeed related. I have been working on the Skaletsky/Skoletsky family tree for over 12 years. There are approximately 800 Skaletsky/Skaletzky/ Skale/ Skaler /Skole/Skoletsky/Scaletscky/Scaletzky and the Cohen cousins throughout the United States, Israel and Brazil.

Heidi, the Rose branch is one area that I do not have information however your great-great grandfather was Shammai Skoletzky who is the brother of Jukah Skaletsky which is the line my family decends from.

Michael, I have been in contact with your brother Jeff for many years.

Please contact me at nancyhjacobs@hotmail.com and I will be happy to send you a copy of the family tree. Hopefully together we can add more leaves on our tree.

Yet another Skoletsky

I feel like I'm arriving late to this party, but I am among the Skoletsky's that arrived in NYC and stayed there. I'm third generation.

I once was in email contact with some Skoletsky's in Boston and California, but we never determined whether we were related. But, I've very interested in what you all have figured out, and would love to see that family tree that Nancy mentioned mentioned. Please feel free to contact me, and I'll contact you.
