There are several Wasyl Dobush/or transliteration variants coming thru Ellis Island.

Wasyl DOBUCH, coming from Skalat, Austria (this was in Galicia>Austro Hungarian Empire>today Ukraine) in 1913. He was 38 @the time. Looks like he was traveling with a Sofia and her/their four children. They were headed for Chicago.

Wasyl DOBUSZ, coming from Pawlakowia, Austria (same geography as above) in 1910. He was 40 yrs old and heading for Allegheny PA.

Wasyl DOBOSZ, coming from Jurowice, Galicia(same geography as above) in 1910. He was 18 and heading for Pittsburgh PA.

Make sure to examine the ORIGINAL SHIP MANIFEST/handwritten copy. That is where the details are.

If none of the Wasyls fit the bill, we will have to convert the surname into Soundex Code and search thru Canadian Border Crossings.

There is also a Wasyl Dobush that shows up in Social Security Records as residing in Ohio. DOB is listed as 1885. If this is your Wasyl, an SS-5 inquiry might provide you with some clues to place of birth, parents' given names and maternal maiden surname.

Dobush/Dovbush is a common name in the Hutsul region in the Verkhovyna District of the Eastern Carpathians. I have relatives in the town of Hrynjava/Hryniava. There is a link of this name to a famous/infamous opryshky(bandit)from the 1700's. My grandfather Ivan Dobush/Dovbush came from this town, but I have not been able to identify any person with these name variants as coming through Ellis Island. I don't know if this helps you out or not, but please let me know what you find out as it may help me too. Good luck.

NO SUCCESS W/ELLIS ISLAND ???

Danylo,

Even some that landed up in New York, did not necessarily come thru Ellis Island. Many eventual New Yorkers immigrated using border crossings, like St. Albans, VT.

I already converted your the Dobush surname to Soundex Code = D-120, but go thru the process yourself.

According to link below, besides showing up in Ellis Island Records (which you and I have both checked w/o any success), the Dobush surname also shows up on Baltimore MD and Philadelphia, PA passenger lists. It also appears in custom cards held at St. Albans, VT. All these are available thru LDS film or NARA films.

PS>Now it is a matter of locating Grandfather Ivan from H(G)rynyava>Verkhovynskij Raion (make sure that this was the district name upon Grandfather's emigration)>Ivano-Frankivska Oblast (formerly called Stanislawow Region.) He would have been coming from Galicia, Austria or even Hungary.
