I am doing a family search on two sisters who immigrated to Canada in 1909 from Austria, and I have already recieved lots of helpful imformation from this website already, thank-you everyone.
I know that the Sorochan sisters were from Nazirna, Kolomyjs, Ukraine, Their names were Paraska( Bessie) and Mary Sorochan, their parents were Samual Sorochan and Bazilia Homaniuk and grandfather was S. Sorochan all were from the same place, they had two sisters who stayed with their parents Anna and Dorthea.
I am in the process of writing to the village or town of Nazirna and would like to know who I should address the letter to so it would be received from someone who reads english, unfortunatley I do not write or speak english and I do not know anyone who does . would there be a school in the town where someone speaks english, any help would be greatly appreciated.
thank you

AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN EMPIRE. Austria @turn of last century was quite a different
place, in size and location, than it is today.

Write to the village mayor/HOLOVA SELA.

<unfortunatley I do not write or speak english>

What language do you speak????

RE: Samual Sorochan and Bazilia Homaniuk:

My grandparents, Ivan & Palahna Sorochan, were from a nearby region of the above persons. Here is more info:
Ivan Sorochan was born in 1862 in the Village of Knyazi,County of Snyatyn, Province of Halychyna, Ukraine. His parents were Onufry and Anetza Sorochan. He had four brothers --- Tanasko, Ilia, Wasyl and Stefan - and three younger sisters. When Ivan was eight years old; his father, stepmother, three sisters and one brother died in a typhoid epidemic.
His oldest brother, Tanasko, raised the survivng brothers. Two Sorochan brothers, Wasyl who migrated to Canada in 1897 and Ivan who migrated to Canada about 1900.

Who was Samual Sorochan father & grandfather in the Ukraine?

Thank you,

Walter Sorochan

I am doing some research as well and may be related to you guys.

My great grandfather, George Sorochan, came to Canada on the SS Montfort on June 28, 1909 with his wife, Annie (Agnes? nee Marusiak) and their 2 boys, Toder (Fedko?) and Wasyl. They were originally from Lashkiwka, Bukovina. George was 34.

I have also seen census information and land documents stating various ways of spelling our surname. I have seen Sorochan, Serocan, Sorokan. I am curious about this.

I came across this forum today - I actually sent you an email Walter - and hope I can find some details of my descendants in the Ukraine or Austria.

I hope to hear from you.
