I am searching for information about my Grandmother and her sister who immigrated to Canada in 1909 from Galicia,They were 14 & 16 yrs old.Their names were Bessie and Mary Sorochan, their mother's maiden name was Hominiuk. They came to Canada with an Uncle and left two sisters back home.I have very little information on them before they came to Canada, I would appreciate any help. Thanks
Their father was a farmer and these places were given as where they may have lived in Galicia, Kolomea, Zellek, Mszana,Vereczko

Where did you get these place names? Have you documented the sisters' + uncle's immigration yet? The ship's manifest should tell you their place of origin.

At the turn of the century Kolomea was a district center/fair size town. Immigrants frequently referred to their district center as place of origin for geographical orientation, because their own villages were very small.

I ran a radius search around Kolomea and the only nearby village listed starting w/Z was ZALUCHYE?

The other two were nowhere nearby. All these villages would have been located in Galicia.

Will take another look later.

PS>Where did the Sorachan sisters settle upon immigration?

To Hannia Re: Sorochan Family search

Hi Hannia;
Thanks for replying.
I was able to find the ship's manifest that I am pretty sure they were on. The ship was the SS Willehad , which sailed from Hamburg April 16, 1909 and arrived in Montreal Quebec May 4, 1909. From there they went by train to Edmonton Alberta where they settled.I found this information from the National Archives in Ottawa called The Ships Passenger lists, it took almost two years going through various passenger lists, since I didn't know the ship they came on or the date. I was able to make out their names ages religion, Greek Orthadox Catholic, where they were going Edmonton, Alberta, They travelled with an uncle who immigrated earlier and came back for his family and they came to.On the passenger list place of origin is listed only as Galicia.
Thank you
Betty

I was hoping that we could ascertain birth place for the Sorochan sisters by their exit records in Hamburg. Unfortunately they are only up to 1902.

Still an interesting site to explore. It provides some background/color to the trip.
