Hi Everyone!

I am new to this forum. I have presently reached an insurmountable roadblock in my family research. I am looking for some much-needed help. I am looking for information that anyone may have on Kolynuk, Kalinuk, Kaliniuk, or any other variant of this surname. First name is Mikhail. Emigrated to Canada from Galicia(?) in early 1900s.

Many thanks!

Jerry

On occasion we do surmount the insurmountable here.

Welcome Jerry!

Although this is a German oriented link, the history re Bukowina is well worth reading.

The surname is derived from Ruthenian/Ukrainian word KALYNA, which means cranberry tree or fruit of the cranberry tree. The suffix IUK makes this a person from the place of cranberry trees or a person who handles cranberry fruit.

As per Ellis Island, MYCHAJLO KALYNIUK, a Ruthenian (most likely practitioner of either Greek Catholic or Christian Orthodox Religion), stepped foot on the North American Continent in 1910. He was 17 yrs old, giving him an birth yr of appx 1893. He was heading to Moosejaw Sask to meet up with his father, Zahery Kalyniuk. He left his mother, Marya Kalyniuk, behind in WASSILEN, BUKOWINA. According to the ORIGINAL SHIP MANIFEST/handwritten copy, his final destination is listed as Quebec Sask. Regina.

Today selo/village, WASSILEN, is MOST LIKELY Vasyliv>Zastavnivskij Raion/District>Chernivetska Oblast> UA, most current zip 59416

Make sure to click on Galicia/Bukowina map here.

OR there is a remote possibility that it is selo Wasylivka>Sokyryanskij Raion>Chernivetska Oblast>UA, 60232.

What is sure is that the village does exist, but we will need to confirm which one is specifically your ancestral village.

Links above should keep you busy for a little bit.

Before moving your search to Ukraine, you do need to document GGrandfather in Canada first. As an aside, most Ellis Island immigrants to Canada used the St. Albans VT border crossing.

Hi Hannia!

This information is very interesting indeed, although the birth dates you mention here do not coincide with what I have in my records. But there are just too many similarities for this to be a different man. It could be that the info I have is incorrect, and this is the reason why I reached such a dead end. Some time ago I did check some of the links that you mention here (Saskatchewan Gen Web Project and Land Grants), but did not find anything close.

I think you may also be correct about the village. I know there is (or was) a large Kalyniuk family living in that area of Chernivetsa Oblast. I believe they owned a large tree orchard there. But I have not yet been able to prove a connection between my family to this one. It would be nice if I could. It would prove that I am a relative to some people I know that are now living in Australia.

Dya-kuyu!! You are great!!

Jerry

P.S. They “abandoned” Mama in Bukovina?! :-o Uh-oh, this does not look good!!

P.P.S. I thought the Kalyna berry came from the Vibernum tree? Maybe just more incorrect information that I have accumulated along this journey? )

<They “abandoned” Mama in Bukovina?! :-o Uh-oh, this does not look good!! >

It is not unreasonable that after a yr or two, Zachery returned home to his wife and possibly other children still in village. Michajlo, probably the eldest son, was left behind in Canada, to make his fortune and continue to help the family in Bukowina. More than half that immigrated to Canada and States, had no intention of staying.

One can get WW2 obits thru LDS for Chernivetska Oblast. Names are listed w/village & district. Cyrillic spelling of surname - Êàëèíþê.

Colynuk Family

Greetings from Toronto!

I was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. I grew up in a neighbourhood that was primarily Ukrainians - first/second generation. Across the street from where I lived was a large family by the name of "Colynuk" - at least that was how it was spelled. Here is a listing of the families in Ontario. The one listed with an "*" was my neighbour. I hope this is helpful. /David

My name is Kaliniuk

Hallo, my name is Kaliniuk too. I live in Poland, but my grandparents come from Ukraine. There aren't many Kaliniuk families in Poland. Please, write in if your name is also Kaliniuk.

Surnames w/KALYNA as root are fairly common Ukrainian surname?

Basia, where had Grandparents lived in Ukraine?
