Hello,
I am researching the siblings my grandparents left behind in Staryj Sambor in the early 1900's. Grandpa's name was Jan Staruszkiewicz, he had a sister, Mary. Grandma's name was Michalina Leninska, she left behind a sister, Anne?, 2 brothers, Basil and Nickolai. Nickolai was in the Army.
I do have my Grandpa's baptism certificate, Roman Catholic. I also have other surnames if they would be of help.
Any help would be appreciated. This is one of the best discussion boards I have seen!

Hello,
I have read several of your replies to others and have learned a great deal. I am searching for the siblings and their descendants of my Grandparents. I have their records from Ellis Island and names and photos of those left behind.
I will also get my Grandparents naturalization papers shortly. My Aunt has them. I have a few questions:
Am I now at the point of starting to search in Ukraine?
When writing to the village parish, if I write the letter in Polish would someone be able to read it?
In my Grandfathers Ellis Island record he put down the name of a cousin as the person he was going to. I cannot find the cousins name in their records. Wouldn't he of had to come to the States first?
I am going to the FHL this week to order some films. I hope they help, but would appreciate any advice you could give.

Grandfather's cousin did not necessarily come thru Ellis Island, even though he might have landed up in NYC???

Cousin's name was transliterated improperly in Ellis Island documents and as a result might be lost (hopefully only temporarily)???

From 1900-1914, the steamship companies competed fiercely for the immigration business. Just like today there were travel deals to be had even then. It was cheaper to travel from Eastern Europe to Britain, and then catch a British steamer from there to Canada, and then train it over to the St. Alban's, Vermont border and cross (all very legally) to USA there.

St. Alban's Crossing entry records are available thru LDS. You need to convert the cousin's surname into SOUNDEX CODE and do an immigration search thru all the entry ports and border crossings within the particular time frame that applies.

However I would look at Ellis Island again and try out some wildcards, using variants of the first three or four letters. Under ethnicity, include Galician, Polish & Ruthenian. Do not use given names. What was the cousin's surname? DO INCLUDE GENDER, otherwise search will not provide possibilities

Are cousin records a critical part of your genealogy puzzle? Will records show that he (cousin) came from Stary Sambor proper or some some village in the district? I somehow doubt it, but it COULD BE, even if everyone else in immediate family lists Starij Sambor as place of origin.

Most of the LDS films are pre 1866's. I would look at these Stary Sambor Roman Catholic Records BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE. See if ancestral surnames listed there. There was a fair amt of ethnic Polish immigration into Eastern Galicia>Austro Hungarian Empire in appx 1870's. If the ancestral family did immigrate into Eastern Galicia/LWOW in the later 19th century, then history will help establish previous roots. If they immigrated earlier, LDS should provide you with a bonanza of info re family, dating back a few centuries.

You can probably bridge the gap in info for Tomacz and his parents by requesting an archival inquiry thru Lviv Historical Archives. There is no prepayment for Ukrainian Archives!!! Using Ukrainian is ideal, however German and English also work fairly well.

As to whether any family survived WW2 in the immediate area? The Bolsheviks shipped many ethnic Poles to Khazakstan & Siberia and many others were forcibly resettled back to Poland.

Vitalij, an Economics scholar here in States and a member of our little club , has personal connections in Staro Sambir. He might be able to help with inquiries re any surviving family still residing in the immediate area.

But until you get more given names, you might be jumping the gun as to the above.

You asked if my Grandfather's cousin was an important part of my research... My Grandparents had 3 children, my Dad is the oldest, and my brother and I are the only grandchildren. I thought that there could be the chance of other relatives here in the States, but I am not making that my priority. My priority is to find my Grandfathers sister and any of her decendants. Her name was Maria Staruszkiewicz from Stari Sambir. I do not know her exact birth year but probably between 1880 and 1885.She would also be the daughter of Tomas and Anna ( Pohorecka). She did not emmigrate to the States. It is believed that she did marry but I am still trying to find her married name.
I also have the given names of my Grandmother's siblings in Stari Sambor. Do you think it is too early to contact Vitalij? One of Grandma's brothers was in the military and her father was a tanner. I do know that they had a Jewish girl who worked at their home.

Above was more rhetorical than anything.

Cousin should be tracked down, if only to fill in the branches of the family tree?

Cousin would also confirm the place of origin as Stary Sambor, the district center, and not some small village in that district? Immigrant ancestors frequently referred to the district center as place of birth for geographical orientation, because their own villages were very small.

Making the cousin connection would help reconnect to more of your own?

Family oral history works to confirm that family was most likely a middle class Polish family living in a fair size Eastern Galician town (Staro Sambor) in that timeframe.

There was always someone riding herd.

Chances are that your family, as Poles, was forcibly resettled elsewhere.

My grandmother often spoke of Stari Sambir as her home and of her "hills". I just assume this is her birth village as I have no other source. My grandparents knew each other in the village but did not "date and marry until they were in the States. My grandfather passed away in 1952 before I was born so I never knew him.
I do have their Naturalization Certificates but they do not show any historical info. Do you think if I wrote to the INS that there would be more info available? I know I can use the Freedom of Information Act.
As of contact with family after WW2... I am still working on that. My Dad and Aunt live in the Chicago area and they are coming to visit me next weekend. I am in Michigan. I hope to "pin them down" on what they can remember. I only know that my Grandma was sending packages overseas from time to time.
An e-mail friend has provided a phone number in Stari Sambir for a Staruszkiewicz. I hope to locate someone at a local Ukranian church here who would be willing to make a phone call for me.

Using Ukrainian is ideal, however English or German work as well. Correspondence from them will be in Ukrainian. Vitalij has someone quite familiar w/Lviv Archives. They can handle all research & translations for you.

Staro Sambir is a fair sized town/city. "Letters to the mayor" work, if the village is small. You have also been served w/a double whammy here. Not only is the town fairly large, but the family was Polish as well. By 1947 most Poles had been deported. Deportation information is not readily accessible.

Get the archival inquiries done!!! The idea is to widen your surname search. The more actual names you have, the better your chances of connecting with any surviving family.

Surnames Ah, you are right, Hannia. Patience is not one of my best attributes. Let me ask you this? Leninska, my Grandmothers maiden name...is that Polish? She listed Ruthen as her ethnicity at Ellis Island. Her mothers maiden name was Prokop and I know that is a common Ruthen name. Grandma spoke several languages. Today, while visiting with my Dad, I spoke some of the Ukrainian to him that I have learned and he recognized some of the words from remembering when Grandma said them.
When you talk of surnames...do you mean for example, my Grandfather's sisters married name?

There is a SZERZYNY (coordinates 49.49 - 21.16), which is not far into Poland from Starij Sambir???

Did you notice Mikolaj ZYBLIKILWICZ (badly transliterated), who arrived 1906, from Hary Sambor, Galicic (obviously Stary Sambor, Galicia). He lists himself as Ruthenian and was 16 at the time. He was heading for his brother's, Wasyli Zyblikiewicz in New York City???

Went to FHL. Saw RC birth records, 1786-1809, Starjy Sambir. Name, Staruszkiewicz everywhere. 8 couples, 24 children. Film labeled to go to 1899 but stopped at 1809. Was hoping to find Gasphari, GGF, but needed to get to at least 1830. At 1809 saw one Leninska. Also, Zdeblikiewicz.
Any idea how to get rest of birth records to 1899?

LDS has mostly filmed records pre 1866. Later dates available thru archival inquiry. BUT telephone LDS first and make sure that later dates are not available thru them. Look carefully @ the surname spelling - Mikolaj ZYBLIKILWICZ.
