My Grandfather, Solomon Sachs, wasborn about 1882.I believe he was from Odessa. In 1906 Solomon came to NY where in 1909 he married Ida Miller. They had a son, Dr. Aaron R. Sachs born November 10, 1910; died July 1, 1977. Solomon Sachs died of tuberculosis on February 27, 1914. Sol's parents as listed on his marriage cert were Julius and Rebekka Sachs. I do not know the "original names. Has anyone ever heard of these people? Can anyone give me an address where I can write for Solomon's birth certicate? Thank you.
Michael

Michael,

Link below takes patience loading, but well worth the effort.
Ellis Island /Jewish Passengers Wild Card
http://home.pacbell.net/spmorse/ellis/ellisjw.html

Found SALAMAN Sachs (24, single, merchant) arriving @Ellis Island 4/10/1906. He lists Odessa as place of origin and heading for his uncle's.
Jakob Jen??? (Hungarian surname???) residing @39 Suffolk Street, NYC.

Try a wildcard search for Jacob as well. History tells us that there was a lot of migration that was taking places in this time frame. Jacob could have been from Bukow(v)ina, Bessarabia, Moldovia or even Poland. The ORIGINAL MANIFEST should tell you where he was from, which will provide you with more family clues.

Do a SOUNDEX SEARCH for surname Jen, no given name, give yourself flexibility on immigration dates (I would use 1892-1906). Make sure to click on appropriate gender, otherwise search will come up w/no results. On ethnicity, click off Magdyar/Hungarian, Polish & Russian.

Salaman emigrated Southern Russia/New Russia, (ruled by Alexander III - Romanov) in 1906, at the hgt of the Pogroms of 1903-1906.

The government administrations in this area have changed rather drastically over the years, from monarchy type appointed governments, to military administrations, to socialist communism, and finally to a free republic.

In Salaman's time frame, Odessa was in Kherson Guberniya/Region, today it is in Odesska Oblast/Region.

According to link below there are Jewish Birth Records from 1882 thru Regional Archives (RAGAS).

Click Archive Database, then Search Database. Do Soundex Search for town.

There is no prepayment when making an archival inquiry in Ukraine. Providing them with FOND INFO will help keep cost down. Using Ukrainian is ideal, however English, German and Russian work as well. All correspondence from them will be in Ukrainian. After receiving your inquiry, they will double check that info is available and notify you what is available. They will also quote cost. All payments will be made to their foreign acct number thru any large bank of your choosing. Once payment is made, expect to see all copies requested in 2-3 weeks. Given the grim economic times in Ukraine, I suggest you include 2 IRC's (Intl Response Coupons) with your inquiry. Can be purchased at your local post ofc. These will help expedite response time and keep you off the unofficial WAIT LIST.

Looks like Odesska Oblast Archives has an addy. I would make inquiry using E-mail first. Page will open w/Odessa Archives info. Addy in first paragraph/blue hyperlink.
