The children of Anna Yurkivna Hunkevych are looking for the relatives of Mel’nyk Paraskovija Josypivna, who arrived to US at May 26, 1914 by ship Vaderland. Her native village is Niniow Dolny, at that time Drogobytch district, Austria. She lived in Philadelphia, had two daughters and son (also one daughter in Ukraine). She died at 80-s. Any information will be appreciated. Please contact me at e-mail vivandr@brandeis.edu. Vitaliy

Hello and welcome to Ukraine.com

It's funny that you have mentioned Melnik (Miller in English) last name. Melnik is one of my family's last names Most of my relatives with this last name live in Ukraine, in the area of Odessa and Poltava.
Unfortunately, the last name Melnik is a very common one in Ukraine, I'm sure that Hannia (member here) would be able to direct you in the right direction, she is very good at that!

Hope you'll find what you're looking for!

Irina

Looking for decendants of Melnyk Parania

I found the correct spelling of her name: Melnyk Parania. I also found that she died on December 1975. Her last known residence is Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19123.
I also have her social security number, but I am not sure how to use it to locate her children and grandchildren. I think that while living in Philadelphia she visited some nearby Ukrainian church. I located few churches that have almost the same zip:

Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (Byzantine - Ukrainian/Philadelphia)
830 N. Franklin St., Philadelphia, PA 19123-2097, Phone: (215) 922-2222

Holy Trinity (Byzantine - Ruthenian/Passaic)
6801 N. 10th Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19126, Phone: (215) 548-2837

Malankara Catholic Mission of Philadelphia (Syro-Malankara - Jurisdiction of Local Roman Ordinary)
The Incraction Rectory, 5105 N. 5th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19120, Phone: (215) 329-2320

St. Nicholas (Byzantine - Ukrainian/Philadelphia)
24th and Poplar Sts., Philadelphia, PA 19130, Phone: (215) 769-3863

Maybe there is somebody on the board who goes to one of these churches and can ask the priest if he remember such a woman and maybe knows something about her descendants.

While being in Ukraine I also was told that the name of one of her grandchild is Nensi.

Will appreciate any help. Thanks, Vitaliy

I realize Melnyk is a very common Ukrainian name, but just thought I'd throw it out there that both my grandmother and grandfather on my mother's side are coincidentally named Melnyk. I forget which regions in Ukraine they hail from, but I know they came to the U.S. post-WWII. I'll have to get that info...

My grandfather is pretty much in touch with his side of the family still in Ukraine. My grandmother passed away in the mid-80's, and took much of her family history with her. My mother said she would never talk about any of it, I guess from the trauma effects of WWII. My great-grandmother, I understand, destroyed the family records during the war. It is rumored though, that my grandmother may have had a sister who headed for Canada after arriving in the U.S., while my grandparents came to Boston. My grandmother's name was Valentina Melnyk, if this rings a bell to anyone... you never know...
