Western Ukrainian selo/village Mirkiw (I=here pronounced as EH)>Horohivskij Raion/District>Vohlynska Oblast/Region>UA ...current zip 45732.

Red Star shows exact location of village -
MapQuest: Maps: print

PS>Village above is in Western Ukraine, however there are several MIRKOVO's in Eastern Ukraine. The surname MIRK is not a Ukrainian surname, unless it was shortened from something else. What is the GIVEN NAME? Is it a coincidence that your Mirks are from Mirkiv? Did you conclude this thru documentation or just guesswork.

Where did you immigrant ancestor settle and in what time frame? Perchance did he settle in Detroit?

Hannia,

Thanks for your reply.

I've reasons to believe that my ancestors are coming from Galicja. So that could be the current south-east of Poland, the west of Ukraine and nord-west of Slovakia.

The surname Mirk is probably a shorten for a village name. So I'm posting this question and hoping that in the old Galicja surroundings people can give me some more clues.

Frankly, I think your approach is an exercise in futility.

The keys to origin of your ancestors are in documents of the country of immigration!!!!

Hannia,

Yes, I'm aware of finding the immigrationrecords will give me the right answers, and there it was!
In the archive of the city of Korbach, Hessen, Germany,
I found a note attached on one of my ancestors.
This was Conrad Mirk born about 1624, married 1650 in Korbach. No information about his birth but he supposed to come from Galicja. (My ancestors have lived in Korbach for at least 350 years)

In a German book about surnames (I don't have the source) was Mirk mentioned to be a shortened for a city in the surroundings of east Slovakia.

Since a big cityfire in 1664 destroyed lots of archive material, there's not much to find before this date. So I'm trying to search the (different) other way around.
Having this clue about location and possibility of name coming from a town name, I'm asking people in this surroundings of south-west Poland, West Ukraine and East Slovakia, if the ever heard or have noticed this surname...

I found a Mirkovce (48.54-21.20) near Bardejov in Slovakia.

Found this by doing DISTANCE SEARCH on Shtetlseeker.

Slovakia is broken down into these medieval towns/areas:
Bratislava( found nothing close to Mirk variation), Bardejov (found above), places not done -Nitra, Banska, Stiavnica, Kezmarok, Kremnica, Spis and Kosice.

Get coordinates of these places and then use browser to go back to original page and scroll all the way down, click DISTANCE. 30 miles is widest search. Put in your coordinates, letter M, click Search and look for anything that resembles Mirk.

Once you get your list of Mirk variations, someone with access to phone directory for these places might be helpful.

JewishGen ShtetlSeeker - Town Search

PS> Given the extensive research you have already done, you know that sometimes the whackiest ideas help to get pass the brick wall. I used Slovakia as country of search. Good Luck!!!!
