My father told me that this is the name of the town that my baba came from in Ykpaina. Mali Kushkivchi- Does anyone know which region?? My dido came from Zapoizhzhya, and I would like to know the history of both regions that my grandparents came from. Any ideas?? I've searched the web relentlessly and have not been able to get details of any cities/towns or village information, but regional information is extensive. thanks!!

This map is good up until 1970. Mali Kuskivtsy was in Ternopilska Oblast/Region. In looking thru the latest Ukrainian Postal Index, the village does not show up. There are two possibilities: the village was absorbed by larger village Lanivtsy or Mali Kuskivtsy is a hamlet and too small to have its own post ofc.

Zaporizhe (alternate name online - Zaporozhye) in southeast Ukraine. It is both the name of the region and the name of the city. Was your family from the large town, Zaporizhe or a village in the Zaporizhska Oblast/Region? There were also many Germans living there in the 18/19th centuries. WHERE DID YOUR ANCESTORS IMMIGRATE and approximately in what time frame?

PS> Many Cossacks made their way to California after the Bolshevik Revolution. They worked as extras and stuntmen in the cowboy movies of early Hollywood. To this day there are stuntmen in Hollywood, who are descendants of Cossacks.

Thank you for this information!!! My grandparents came to Canada anywhere between 1950-1955 to Canada, along the St. Lawerence Sea way, first settling in Asbestos, Quebec Canada. Strychowskyj is my grandfathers (english version) last name is have forgotten my grandmothers maiden name.

Your Grandparents were most likely DP's/Displaced People emigrating from Germany.

<DPs" came to Canada primarily either under the sponsored labour scheme, which required them to sign a contract guaranteeing that they would remain employed in farming, mining, domestic service, railway work, or other forms of manual labour for a period of two years; or, under the close relative scheme, which enabled Canadian citizens to sponsor their close relatives stranded in Europe. Between 1947 and 1952 female "DPs" could come to Canada only as domestic contract workers.>

This is a link that your father can help you explore.
It is probably the most comprehensive re Post WW2 Ukrainian DP subject.
Unfortunately France info is still very limited, but France is very genealogy friendly and any info under 100 yrs is held locally.
DP Camps in Europe

If your father has a copy of his own Baptismal Certificate, info where Grandfather was from should be there. Does your father remember if his father was from a village or large town?

PS>Still working on finding out what happened to Grandmother's village.
