Nykol might be a shortened version of surname??? It is a surname of patronymic origin.

What was Theodosia's surname upon immigration? Do you have any idea what the port of entry might have been?

What oral history do you have?

Nykol

My Baba's surname was Nykol. Her tato's name was Gregory. Her mother's maiden name was Catherina Caspar (not sure on this spelling, more of a pronunciation. My grandmother went to Phila. I don't have much more except that she had a first cousin by the name of John Malonoski who also settled in the area and eventually married by grandfather's 2 sisters. Thank you

Tesia (nick for Theodosia?) Nykol, 18, arrived @Ellis Island on 3/4/1913.

She was heading for her sister's (Anna Nykol) 925 Heralkme???, Philadelphia, PA. There was a bunch of gals coming from the same village,
Lurak, Drohobych>Austria. Tesia left father STEFAN Nykol behind in village.

PS> I need to take a closer look for village. Suspect it was absorbed into Drohobych>Lvivska Oblast/Region. Bare in mind that in 1913 this was still Eastern Galicia>Austro Hungarian Empire. This was her reason for listing Austria as place of origin.

Anna Nykol immigrated several months before, 11/13/1912. Ellis Island also port of entry. She shows father as Stefan and coming from Lurchdol>Galicia.

It is also possible that these were Grandmother's cousins. Even so, it would give us place of origin for Grandmother Theodosia.

NYKOL

Thank you again, Hannia. My grandmother had 2 sisters, Anna, and Mary. Anna maried into the Hnatyn family and lived in the same town as my grandmother. Mary died at a very young age and never had children due to this. She is buried in the Ethnic-Catholic cemetery at the woods behind my home. We are a very small ethic village. My grandmother always told me that I looked exactly like Mary. Anna also named one of her sons Gregory?? I have 2- 2nd cousins, Anna's granddaughters, who also very interested in their heritage. As far as my great-grandfather's name is concerned, My Aunt insists it was Gregory; however, my grandmother had two brothers who remained in Ukraine. She communicated with them until her death in 1988; however, my Aunt did not properly maintain documents relating to our family. This would have provided much needed information on family members. I remember seeing pictures of cousins' weddings etc., that were sent to her from her brothers and she also sent money, products, to them. I would read the letters, written in Ukrainian, to her. My grandmother named one of her 4 sons, Stefan, the others Stash, John and Joseph. Maybe this is the correct name for my great-grandfather. My baba made the best Paska!

Hallelujah, I think I finally "unmangled" Lurek/Lurak/Lurch-dol transliteration. LUZHEK DOLNY!!!! Ancestral villages (Stupnitzya & Luzhek Dolny) seem to be very close to each other.

I have one more thing to do and then I will get back to you.
