Lodzuk (possibly Lodziuk???)

There is a Konstantin Lodziuk arriving @Ellis Island in 1912. He was headed to PA.

Where did your immigrant/ancestor immigrate, States, Canada...appx what time frame? Specifically where did he settle upon immigration?

Searching for Lodzuk

Thank you for responding. My grandfather was born in Somber. He immigrated to Phila., Pa.,;however, I cannot find any listing at Ellis Island. I have only a few relatives in the entire US and Canada and we all live in a 5 mile radius of each other. I live 20 miles outside of Phila. I was told there are 2 Lodzyk living in Kiev. I cannot document this however. If you can give me any leads for further sites, etc., I would be forever grateful. My Grandfather, John left several brothers in the Ukraine. by the name of Stefan, Stanley, Peter, etc. My father Stashu and 3 other brothers passed away in the 90's. There is no paperwork, etc. to document any relative except that my great grandmother on my dad's side was Natasha Poctoczniak. My grandmother was Theodosia Nykul. Thank you again for your help. Alexsa

Given name John was anglicized from either Jan or Ivan.

Somber, SAMBOR in>pre 1919 was in Eastern Galicia, administered by ethnic Poles for Austro-Hungarian Empire>1919-1939 became part of Poland>post 1939 became Ukraine SSR, part of Soviet Union> today SAMBIR is a fair sized city, the local district center, in Lvivska Oblast/Region, Western Ukraine.

Does oral history have Grandfather as coming from a small village or larger town? Immigrants frequently referred to their district center/larger town as place of origin for geographic reasons, because their own villages were very small.

Before moving your search to Ukraine, you need to document the family here in States. Given the economic circumstance in Ukraine, it is easy enough to accumulate relatives, which might not even be your own.

produced
JAN LODZIUCH (20 yrs old), arriving @ Ellis Island in 1913.
He was heading for his sister's (Zofia Lodziuk) in Philadelphia.
He was Ruthenian (Ukrainian) coming from Galicia - Stupnica.
He was single upon arrival. Had $25 in pocket. There's a snafu - Jan lists mother as Tacianna Lodziuch from Stupnica/Krausberg. Do you have any documentation that states his mother was Natasha? Natasha is a very unusual given name for a woman from this area.

I used LODZ for STARTS WITH & J as initial for given name.
1900-1914 as immigration dates and under ethnicity clicked off Galician,
Polish, Ruthenian, Russian.

Stupnica today STUPNITSA is 18.3 miles SW of Somber/SAMBOR >today SAMBIR.

I will double-check all geography only when we know for sure that this Jan is your Grandfather John.

Jan's brothers were Stefan, Stanislaw & Petro??? The given names would indicate Polish influence in the family, although Jan above claimed Ruthenian ethnicity, making him ethnically Ukrainian. (Many villages around Sambor were BOYKO/BOJKO, a micro-ethnic group.)

It is also not unreasonable that your Grandfather used Philadelphia as port of entry. Many immigrants also came thru Canada using border crossing, St. Albans. Unfortunately much of this is not available online.

I ran a SOUNDEX CODE for the surnames you listed in your original post -
Lodzuk/Lodziuk/Lodzuich/Lodzyk/Ludczyk. IT IS L322!!! This can be used in examining passenger lists/films available thru LDS/Mormon Genealogy Library & NARA (Natl Archives in Washington). Another good resource for researching family in States is the Federal Census. You can view 1920 census for PA. 1930 is only partially filmed and not available for PA yet.

Searching for Lodzuk

Ya ku yu Hannia! My gedo lived in Stupnica! I remember my Aunt telling me this. Also, my Aunt's name is Zofia and my other Aunt is Rose! My gedo had 2 sisters, Zofia and Rose. Zofia died and her husband, John Malonoski, went back to the homeland and married Rose. My mistake---my gedo's mother was Tacianna! Natasha was on my baba's side. This has to be my gedo. Was there any other information as far as his father's name or brothers etc.? I prayed to St. Therese yesterday for help in finding this info and you were the Rose that she sent me to answer my prayer. I don't know how to express my gratitude. Alexsa
