Can you tell me where my family came from if I give you my surname?

NO, not with any degree of accuracy!!!

Slavic surnames could have originated from many different countries.

The influences in the case of Ukrainian or Russian surname HDAL/GDAL could be German or Swedish. DAHL is a common Swedish nature termination surname. DAL is a derivation from German TAL/THAL. Both mean -- someone (originally) from a valley.

The surname Hdal/Gdal or some variation of, can be found in Bohemia, Eastern Ukraine, Russia and other Eastern European countries. Since the 17th/18th century, the surname might even have a Jewish branch.

If your purpose is to locate surviving relatives by examining linguistic roots, then you are wasting your time. Ukrainian history, especially its more recent Soviet past, works against you in using this approach.

There is an excellent read re the Ukrainian surname subject that I can recommend, but will it help you accomplish what you want to do. I very much doubt it.

Bohdan,

If you are a native Ukrainian, archival research is (supposedly) available free of charge.

Govt Committee of Ukrainian Archives (in Ukrainian)
http://www.scarch.kiev.ua/index.ua.html

There are records on film, which are widely available thru LDS (Mormon Genealogy Library), however there are no Family Centers in Ukraine, where these films can be viewed by native Ukrainians.

Today most filming is being done in Eastern Ukraine. The various German genealogical groups have generously donated several expensive pieces of technology to enable that effort.

This is an example of some older material that is available thru LDS.

PS>The key to all archives research is knowing EXACT DATE & PLACE OF BIRTH (location as it is today, which includes raion/district and oblast/region). Religion also plays an important role in genealogy research. Most vital records in Ukraine are based on Church/Religious Records. Methodically working backward provides the most accurate results.
