Shapowal/Szapowal/Szapuwal/Szupowal/Szapoval/Szupowol are all the same surname. These are merely variant transliterations (SOUNDS LIKE) from Cyrillic to Latin Alphabet.

The only correct spelling of your surname is in its original language, using its original alphabet!

Ukrainian Transliteration Table

Information about where your family came from, will be found in documents and sources created after immigrating.

First thing, talk to the elders in the family. Get as much oral history as you can! Try ascertaining appx timeframe of immigration. What religion did your Shapowal immigrant/ancestor practice? Did your Shapowal immigrant/ancestor originally settle in/around Edinburgh, Galashiels or Dundee???

There were Sh/zapowals in the Vohlyn area; some in what is today's Polish/Ukraine border areas; others from what is Central Ukraine/around Kiev. There are over 50 million people in Ukraine. In order to find your Sh/zapowal family, you will need to ascertain the EXACT date and place of birth for your Shapowal immigrant/ancestor!!!!

There is some indication that the Shapowal surname might be of Germanic extraction.

Keep in mind that Vohlyn Gubernia & Eastern Ukraine were part of the Old Russian Empire/Tsarist Russia at the turn of the century.

Maybe we can shortcut the process.

Write a letter of inquiry to org below. Grandfather's place of origin and names of GGrandparents might be in their archives.

Association of Ukrainians
in Great Britain Limited
49 Linden Gardens
Notting Hill Gate
London W2 4HG

Direct letter to attn of Mr. M. Klymchuk, Welfare Officer

PS> Mr. Klymchuk is a lovely man, who seems to go out of his way to locate info.
Just tell him you are the grandson looking to connect w/your Ukrainian roots. Let me know how that goes.
