Looking for TRYTYNYK/TRETINIK and SHPONTAK families in Ukraine for genealogy purposes. I know of families in Dubrivka and Uzgorod. Would appreciate any information at all. Thank you.

Make sure to read thru before clicking!

According to Ellis Island Records both the Spontak's from Dubrivka and Tretinik's from Ungoras/Uzhorod list themselves as SLOVAK. (A key to your research will be religion? Were they Roman or Greek Catholic? Were they Christian Orthodox?)

Do a wildcard search for your ancestors on link below. I did not succeed using SHPON as STARTS WITH in Surname Search, so I tried SPON. Click off Male. Flexible dates 1900-1914. Under Ethnicity click off Galicia, Ruthenian, Polish, Russian & Slovak.
For Tretynyk, I used TRET as STARTS WITH and the rest same as above for SPON.

Details are under ORIGINAL SHIP MANIFEST/handwritten copy. Under TRET Starts with search, make sure to look for any other name of village/town than Ungaros/Uzhorod. Chances are your immigrant ancestors did not come from large town, but rather from small nearby village in the region.

Once you have ascertained some names from Dubrivka, you might consider writing the village mayor and inquiring re any surviving relatives still residing in village.

Zakarpatska Oblast
Uzhorodskij Raion
selo Dubrivka
Holova Sela
UA 89445

Using Ukrainian is ideal, however English or German will work as well. Make your letter as simple as possible, because it will have to be translated there. I would also suggest including 2 IRC's (Intl Response Coupons) w/your letter of inquiry. The Ukrainian economy is pretty grim and the IRC's will help expedite response. The mayor or any surviving relatives can exchange these at their local post ofc for stamps.

Uzhorod is a fair sized town and such a letter of inquiry would not work.

There is also a DIBRIVKA>Irshanskij Raion/District>Zakarpatska Oblast/Region>Ukraine - zip code for this village is 90133

I will leave it to you to ascertain which is the correct village, using links above.

I am hopeful that Louis' source can help you fill in the blanks. If I am not mistaken, I think Louis Schonfeld is still the president of Hungary Jewish SIG (Special Interest Group). He is aware that most of our Carpatho Rusyn members here are of Christian Orthodox or Greek Catholic descent. I would like to suggest that making a small donation to Louis' org in return for his generosity is distinctly something everyone should consider.
