I am looking for my lost Laganiak relatives in Ukraine.
My parents Trofim & Tatjana Laganiak came to the US in 1950, and corresponded with them until about 1956-57 when there were no replies to their letters. Can anyone help?

You can do several things.

You can contact the Red Cross, since last direct contact w/family was WW2.
The Red Cross will do a search, even if there is no name of village/town. This is a long sit & wait. Average search takes over a year.

<The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv, unfortunately, is unable to assist individuals that may be searching for either their Ukrainian or American relatives either here in Ukraine, or in the United States.

As an alternative, you may want to consider the possibility of trying to contact your relatives through the International Red Cross or Ukrainian National Red Cross Society in Kyiv. They may be able to search for relatives with whom you lost contact √ either in Ukraine or in the United States. If you last had news of them in Ukraine during World War II, that is, before May 1945, please provide any identifying information to the Red Cross. The Red Cross will search for relatives lost in Ukraine during World War II even without an address.

However, if you last had news from your relatives more recently, the Red Cross requires an address no older than 20 years from the time of the request. There is no cost for searches, but they may take a considerable amount of time (one year or longer).

Your other alternative is to write a letter of inquiry to the village mayor. Do you know the name of the village? In the mid fifties time frame, it was probably pragmatic to cut all ties with any family in America. Such a relationship could get one a long holiday in Khazastan or even Siberia. Could very well be that some residual family might still be in village.
