I am trying to find any relatives in the Ukraine. My grandfather came over here at approx. 16 in around 1912. His name was Ignatz Poverchuk. He said he came from outside Odessa - a farmer.
I remember a village name that sounded something like Calitinski.
Can anyone point me in the right direction for research?

Where did your Grandfather immigrate? Where did he settle? Where is HERE?

The closest transliteration I could come up w/was the village Zheltyanskij in the Odessa area. But, the only way you will ever know for sure is to document Grandfather's place of birth!

What oral history do you have?

According to Ellis Island Records Ignatz Poverchuk/FGNATY POWARCZUK claimed he was 19 in 3/1912, although in actuality he might have been 16. It was not uncommon for immigrants to fib about their age. He had $25 in his pocket.

The port of departure was Libau. He was joining a friend, A. Depudak??? @12 Misserich St. in Medford Mass. He left his father, Afanasy Powarczuk, behind in Kolotinzi, W/Volyn Gubernya>Czarist Russia.

Note that there was also a Sergey & Wassily Powarczuk leaving their wives, Nulashra??? and Sofia behind in Koletynetz/Koletinez>Wolyn Gubernya and immigrating to Boston.

The details are on the ORIGINAL SHIP MANIFEST, where all pages should be viewed using Zoom (icon on top).

I used Shtetlseeker to locate Kolotinzi/KOLODNITSA - just 1.6 miles east of Kovel. These maps are good to 1970. Village (51.2333-24.75) initially shows up as 51.14-24.45. Nearby towns/villlages are Kovel, Bilyn, Kolodyazhne & Verbka.

According to the latest Ukrainian Postal Index, Kolodnitsa no longer exists.

Suspect it was absorbed into city of Kovel. You will have to verify this.

Ignaty Powarczuk probably used this railroad station to make his way to Libau.

Only Powarczuk I could find in White Pages, although there are several Poverchuks in Massachusetts.
