hey, i'm in canada, and our name is beskowiney, but that was changed from something close to it when my grandparents came from ukraine. or maybe it was my great-grandparents (i'm not sure). anyway, they were apparently from the austrian part of ukraine, which i didn't even know existed, so any info would be great!

Bezkowiney/Bezkorowayny?

The surname could be of Galician Cossack heritage?

Galician Cossacks served the largest landlord of the time.

Hrushevsky, renown Ukrainian Historian, has written fairly extensively about the very subject.

This is a GENERAL good read just to get an idea how Galician Cossacks lived.

PS> Where did your ancestors settle in Canada? Local links available. Before moving on to Ukraine, you will need to document the family in Canada first. The key to any genealogy search is date and place of birth for first immigrant/ancestor.

Yorkton, Canada - Genealogy Links

These will get you started. Remember to stay flexible w/ all transliterations (sounds like) of surnames. The key for connecting to Ukraine is DATE & EXACT PLACE OF BIRTH.
