Based on transliteration only, it is very difficult to ascertain where surname originated.

BLASKO = surname common to Carpathian area = Slovak or Hungarian? Could be of RUSYN (pronounced RUE-SEEN in English) origin. Rusyn is not same as Russian.

Variant transliterations (sounds like) of surname to Cyrillic Alphabet.

Blasko/Blasco = Áëàñêî
Blashko = Áëàøêî (possibly Áëÿøêî, which would be correctly transliterated as Blyashko)
Blaschko = Áëà÷êî

Ukrainian Transliteration Table

PS> The only correct spelling of surname is in its original language, using the original alphabet. The political geography and confusion of demographics of Eastern Europe makes it anyone's guess.

Was your BLASKO an immigrant? Where did he/she immigrate? Approximately when? Where did they settle specifically? What religion did they practice? It is only thru documentation, that you will be able to figure out what the origin of this Blasko surname was.

What oral history (are there any elders to ask) and/or documentation do you have? What was the given name?

If you provide me w/more info I might be able to help.

PS> See Cyrillic not being picked up. If you provide me your e-mail address, I can send the transliterations to you.

Smile Blashko, Blaszko ??/

Hi Bart,
I saw your message on this site and I was wondering about the Blaszko name. I've been trying to trace my grandfather. His name was Alexander Blaszko, (Blashko). He came from Kielce, Poland to america in 1905-1910 era. He was born in Aug. 1893 and also had 2 sisters. Maryna and Julia who also came to america after him. He lived in Pennsylvania til his death in 1950.I can't locate any record of his arriving in Ellis Island, but obviously he did come. The agent probably didn't spell his name properly. Anyhow I am trying to locate relatives in Poland whom I might be related to. If any of this info sounds familar to you please email me back . Thanks Steve
