Hello,

My gandfather has always told me that our roots were in Ukraine. His father arrived in Paris in 1917 then founded a new family in France, but he always said that he was already married and have a wife in Ukraine (right or wrong?).
Is Turmenko very familiar in Ukraine? (we are the only one in France).
Is there any possibility to investigate my genealogy in Ukraine?

I wish every body a MERRY CHRISTMAST!!!!!

Dany

Thumbs up Hi

Welcome to Ukraine.com!

Although it's better to wait for Hannia to respond to your message, she is much better at genealogy info than I am, but the name Turmenko caught my eye.
I had a classmate in Odessa, Ukraine, her name was Oksana Turmenko (she must be 25 years-old now), she also had 5 brothers and sisters.
I know this is not much help, but maby you can look in Odessa when you do your search.

I have a few thoughts, which might help in your search.

1) Turmenko is a surname, which would more likely be found in Eastern Ukraine, than Western Ukraine. The ENKO suffix would indicate that, but this is not necessarily exclusive to the area.

2) Because of immigration date, 1917, my guess is that Great Grandfather might have been in the military and decided not to continue his service. Bare in mind that WW1 timeframe - 1914-1918. During that time your Great Grandfather's actions were not unusual. Once you ascertain Great Grandfather's birthplace, a little history reading will color in that part of Great Grandfather's life.

3) According to oral history, did anyone ever hear him refer to himself as a WHITE RUSSIAN? What about as COSSACK?

It is critical to establish Great Grandfather's Date And Place of Birth!!!

France is very genealogy friendly. Records are kept at the local level for 100 yrs before they are sent on to Central Archives.

Somewhere in the civil registries, you will find his exact place of birth. Once you do that, you can do an archival search in Ukraine and then possibly make a connection to surviving family.

Without an exact place of birth, it is like searching for the smallest needle in the largest of haystacks.

Additional information and request

Thanks to Irina and Hannia,

A family phone call give me more information:

Turmenko Alexis is born 16 March 1892 at Broussilow

Where is Broussilow?

It seems that he have come for the war but didn't return back to Ukraine.

In France he was shoe repairer.

Again thanks and kindest regards

Dany

Broussilow = Brussilow>Brusilov>Brusiliv 50.17N - 29.32E 44.5 WSW Kiev

Fairly current map (printable), still uses OV siffix, now IV
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/print.a...NczZ%2bx0Mr9hb

Brusiliv> Korostyshivskij Raion/District/Zhitomyrska Oblast/Region/State

Because you have the Exact Date and Place of Birth, you can request an archival search in the Zhitomyrska Oblast Archives.

State Archives of Zhytomyr Oblast (newest address & zip code)

Zhytomyr
vul. Ochrimova Hora 2/20
Derzhavnyi Arkhiv Zhytomyrskoji Oblasti
Director: Mykola Shapran
Asst Director: Nina Savchenko
UA 10003

Archival inquiries run about $50 American per Surname search, subject to change, depending on how complex search is. THERE IS NO PREPAYMENT. DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY, until you hear from them.

Using Ukrainian for your inquiry is ideal, however English and German work as well.

You submit your inquiry in with as much information, including dates or time frame, as you might have. The Archives does the search for you and then sends you a notifying/billing letter in Ukrainian that gives you a general idea of what they have found and what the cost of the search is. They also provide you with instructions on how to deposit payment
in their bank account. Once payment is rcv'd, it will take approximately two weeks before you get copies of the pertinent documents. Turn around time 2-3 months.

To expedite response, include 2 IRC's (Intl Response Coupon) with your inquiry. Can be purchased at your local post office at nominal cost.

List name of town/village, district and oblast as it is today!

Once you get all available archival documents re Great Grandfather, you will have patronymics, Great Great Grandmother's maiden name, name of all his siblings and most importantly name of his wife in Ukraine and any offspring he might have had.

Once you have all above info, you can write directly to village mayor and inquiry re any surviving relatives!

Will provide you w/address next week. Need to check exact mail/zip code.

Possible military info might be obtained thru link below. No data available online. I would however leave this until after you do state archival inquiry.

<Military Service records - Military service records are found in the Military Historic Archive in Moscow and are similar in detail to the civilian service records. A service record is more likely to exist if the person was an officer. It is useful to know which branch of service the person served in. A photograph of the person in uniform is most helpful.>

PS>The Russian Revolution took place in 1917. Great Grandfather might have been in Tsarist Army and decided it would be best to emigrate? Going back home was not an option for him?
