If immigrant ancestor came thru Ellis Island
BUT THERE IS NO RECORD AT ELLIS ISLAND.
Was the name transliterated differently, than it is spelled today? Did your ancestor get a real sloppy transliterator? On the original ship manifest/handwritten copy, the same surname shows up spelled 3/4 different ways. Is your ancestor on one of the missing manifests? Ellis Island was not the perfect record keeping place for starters and after closing, fell into disrepair for many yrs, until it was restored. There are missing manifests! The information on these missing manifests can sometimes be located. The missing manifests also include damaged manifests which were not duplicated for the Ellis Island site. These too can be examined. Here is a site that will help w/ a wild card surname search @ Ellis Island. Just type in the first few letters that you might be sure of. Click STARTS WITH. Fill in as much as you can, remembering to keep the search as wide as possible. Stay very flexible with any oral history. Keep dates especially flexible. Avoid given names input. Your John might be Iwan, Ivan, or Jan. Searching Ellis Island Database in One Step http://home.pacbell.net/spmorse/ellis/ellis.html |
