How far have you gotten?
Your surname is very unusual. What do you know about your heritage? Where did your ancestors immigrate? In order to make a connection to any surviving relatives in ancestral country, a Date and Place of Birth for the immigrant ancestor is critical. Marcinkevicious might be an unusual surname on the North American Continent, however if original was transliterated incorrectly and your actual surname is Marcynkewycz, or some variation of that, it becomes a not uncommon name in Ukraine. There is also some variations on the same surname in Poland. [Edited by Hannia on 28th November 2001 at 09:31] |

Hi Hannia
thanks for responding
I had a very successful family search. My great grandfather Vincas Marcinkevicius came from Suvainiskis,Lithuania in Rokiskis district in 1902-1903 I believe. He had lived in Vilnius. He was a conscript and a cooper. He had a son supposedly who was buried nearby.I had written a letter to a relative supposedly and never heard a response since. It was a long time ago and the family was cut off essentially after WWII.Marcinkevicius is a Polish/Lithuanian surname as far as I know.Marcinkiewicz is Polish I think. Thank you for Ukrainian version. I figured I would just post and see if anyone had any information.Lithuanians seem to be very quiet about family history and history in general.I figured I would try Ukraine and maybe Russia next.My understanding is some Lithuanians moved to St.Petersburg. |

Why would not knowing Lithuanian stop you?
In the digital world you can learn basic Lithuanian online (free) and/or use a translator for whatever services you might need (not free, but also not expensive).
In SEARCH, type in <learn Lithuanian online> or <free Lithuanian translation>. http://www.google.com/ PS> Have Fun!!! |
