I am looking for information on the Surname YAKIMENKO. My grandfather's name was Conrad and he migrated to Canada (Saskatchewan) sometime before the 30's. He married a BUTCHKO (Paula?) but both died before my dad was very old.

Yakimenko/JAKIMENKO

I went to Ellis Island Records just to get a general feel for where other Yakimenko's came from...

Found CONRAD JAKIMENKO/another transliteration of Yakimenko
JA sounded out is YA

He had $25 in his pocket. He arrived in New York on September 17, 1912 on the Kaiser Wilhelm II, sailing out of Bremen, Germany. He was 21 and single. (giving him a birth year of c 1891) Place of origin is listed as Sebastiansfeld, Russia. He was traveling with a whole family of Doll's from Sebastiansfeld. They were all heading for Joseph Doll's home in Balgornio? SK. Canada. Grandfather Conrad lists Joseph as friend. The Doll's list Joseph as nephew etc/relative.

Passenger Search
http://ellisisland.org/search/index....6740052753504&

The details are on the ORIGINAL MANIFEST!!! The original manifest is incomplete. List w/names missing. That is the page on which Grandfather Conrad would have listed name of relative in Sebastiansfeld. <We need to locate that missing page>

To see all the Doll's Grandfather was traveling with, click TEXT MANIFEST.

<Sebastiansfeld needs to be researched. Did quick look, but will need to do very detailed search. It looks to be one of those German Colonie towns/villages. Many towns/villages with same name in Old Russia. Will get back to that later.>

First we need to ascertain where Grandfather crossed into Canada. Most likely thru St. Albans, Vermont. He was traveling in 1912.

I will need a few days to figure out where to look for double-check documentation. Bremen was exit port, so there should be records there as well. The Mormon Genealogical Library should be helpful too.

Meanwhile I need you to find out where this Balgornio/nia? SK was/is. Was/is it near Watson SK, where there is a Yakimenko buried in the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Cemetery. A Rev. Rose of the Anglican Church has documented a list w/some detail for that cemetery and a Yakimenko is on that list.

Have you done any kind of research...census, land grant, death, matrimonial?

What religion was your father? He would have followed religion of parents.

There were/are Butchko's in Regina/Iruna? area.

Read thru before clicking.

Found missing page of Ellis Island ORIGINAL MANIFEST!!!

Passenger Search
http://ellisisland.org/search/index....6740052753504&

Do regular search for CONRAD JIKIMENKO on Ellis Island link. When search result comes up, click on name. Next you will see the Ellis Island copied Record.

Next - Click ORIGINAL MANIFEST.

When handwritten manifest comes up, click PREVIOUS on right side. Then click PREVIOUS again. Click ZOOM icon for closeup.

Here you will find #1 Conrad Jakimenko, who lists himself as a Russian, a farm laborer.
Nearest relative is brother Ludrei?/Andrei? Jakimenko, living in Sebastiansfeld, Chers (which is abbr for Cherson), Russia (1835-1917 area was called BERESAN Province in old Russian Empire, NOW UKRAINE).

I did check for exit verification in Bremen. The Bremen exit lists covering immigration during 1910-1920 were destroyed during Allied bombing raids on Bremen during WW2.

PS> For your genealogy folder, you might consider purchasing a copy of the original manifest and a picture w/info of the steamship - Kaiser Wilhelm II (owned by North German Lloyd Co) thru Ellis Island.

Using both these links I was able to establish that both villages, Malakhovo and Dmitrivka, are in Berezanskij Raion of Mykolaivska Oblast. Dmitrivka is 2.8 miles NW of Malakhovo.

So now we know that Grandfather Conrad was born in either Malakhovo or Dmitrivka>Berezanskij Raion/District>Mykolaivska OblastRegion.

Once Grandfather's birthdate is established, then you will need to do an archival inquiry at the State Archives of Mykolaiv. There you will get the names of his parents and all his siblings and whatever other documentation might exist for him.

Keep this address for very near future use.

State Archives of Mykolaiv Oblast :

Mykolaiv
vul. Vasliaieva, 43
Derzhavnyi Arkhiv Mykolaivskoi Oblasti
Director: Ludmila Okorokova
Asst Director: Larisa Levchenko
UA 54044

e-mail - root@damo.mk.ua

I will provide you with how to instructions when the time comes. Once names of Grandfather's siblings are established, you will also be able to write village mayor and inquire re any surviving relatives still residing in village, and hopefully make contact if you so desire.

Next task is St. Alban's documentation. That will have to be done another day.

You have plenty to absorb!

NA - Genealogy Research

Click IMMIGRATION RECORDS, then BORDER ENTRY RECORDS
Read thru.

You want Border Entries 1908-1918 and click.

Click NEW YORK (Grandfather's port of entry). Look thru NY State and St. Alban's/Vermont, keeping Grandfather's date of arrival at Ellis Island in mind. Notate all films that would include that date. Order film and bring a magnifying glass and lots of patience. Grandfather Conrad should be on one of those films. Remember to make a copy of the record for yourself.

Border Entry Records should confirm Grandfather Conrad's immigration route!

My guess is that Grandfather Conrad never left the area after arrival.

One of the first things Grandfather Conrad (seems to be the pattern for area) might have done was to take a trip to Regina and file a homestead application.

These links should get you started looking for Grandfather Conrad's records in Canada.

Thank you so much for the information. My dad (Gerry) had/has several siblings. The ones I know of are Joseph, Paul, Elizabeth, and Alexander. They are from the Watson SK area. I have made some contact with them (their children) although have had little luck finding anything more about Conrad (not even a cemetery record).

Forgot dad's brother Roger too. I don't know who the oldest is but do know Alex was born in '26, also know Elizabeth is about 10 years older then dad (who was born in '37). Dad was put into foster home when Conrad died in the mid-40's, then shipped out to Vancouver. He didn't hear again from his siblings until the 70's when Elizabeth found him/us in Manitoba.
