Further Information for Hannia
Hi Hannia
I have found some more information about my grandad. He comes from a village called Zubomist in the Kaminka area. During WW2 it sounds like he went pretty much everywhere! He was in the Ukranian Division Galicia until he was captured. He had to fight for whoever he was told just to keep alive. He ended up as POW in Italy, moved on to Austria and ended up in the UK. His uncle (Antin Labaj) was apparently very high ranked in the UPA Insurgent Army. I hope this is of some interest to you, and if you can help me anymore, it would be greatly appreciated. Best wishes Adrian |

Zubiv Mist>Kamianka-Buzkij Raion>Lvivska Oblast
Zubiv Mist>Kamienka-Buzkij Raion/District*/Lvivska Oblast/Region
*Formerly Kamenka Strumlova Zubiv Mist = means toothlike bridge? Village is 3.8 miles NNW of Kamenka and about 26 miles NNE of Lviv. DEE- DOE's (DEE-DOE = Ukrainian transliteration for Grandfather) village still exists! Current map. Village shows up as STAR. Print up a copy for your genealogical folder! ZUBIV MIST http://www.mapquest.com/cgi-bin/ia_f...847nd67_1wbngz,bb6%7c_%3d%3a%28_%3d47nd67_1wbngz%28l%241w-u.wf7%3bxcx5sf7.grfe%7cs SUGGESTIONS: Do an archival search. This will provide you w/archival documentation re Grandfather for inclusion in your own genealogical folder. Thru the archives you can also get documentation for Great Grandparents. I did a quick look and there are Church Records prior to 1880's available for the village thru the Mormon Genealogical Library. Once you get info on Grandfather and Great Grandparents, you should be able to trace back the family line to about 17th century. (Make sure to get given names of both Great Grandparents...and Great Grandmother's maiden name.) It is in this generation that you will be making a documented connection to Antin Labaj. Make sure to record any oral history in writing. I use a small recorder and then later transfer everything to print. Treat the trivial w/the same importance, as you do the facts. Boyhood stories are especially colorful. In doing this search, you will not only be providing your Grandfather w/a wonderful gift, but you will also have created a family legacy to pass on to your own Grandchildren. In order to locate Grandfather's surviving relatives, you will be writing a letter to the village mayor. I will provide you with all how-to. I am not posting any addresses yet, because I am waiting to hear from Ukrainian Post Ofc re exact zip code for Zubivmist. Should know in the next day or so. PS> In the interim you might be interested in making the acquaintance of Markian Hadzewycz. He is an Internet authority on UPA. He might be able to help w/ info re Antin Labaj...or at least direct you where to look for further info. Received zip code for village this morning.
Address to Village Mayor: HOLOWA SELA ZUBIV MIST KAMIANKA-BUZKYJ RAION LVIVSKA OBLAST UA-80421 For your own postal authority print UKRAINE on bottom left or right of envelope. Do same when addressing archival inquiry. Using Ukrainian is ideal, however English will work as well. It might just slow things down a little. Identify yourself as the Grandson, doing genealogical research. Provide Grandfather's full name, yr of birth, and all patronymics (given names of Great Grandparents, including Great Grandmother's maiden name, if you can). Indicate what year Grandfather left village. Provide names and dates, w/no personal details re Grandfather. Ask mayor if there are any family members still living in the village. If so, to please pass your letter along. Also suggest that you will be very appreciative to the mayor for his effort. Make sure to include an IRC w/your letter!!! International Response Coupons can be purchased at your local post office. Given the difficult economic times in Ukraine, the IRC will expedite any response time. ____________________________________________ Re Archival Search @State Archives of Lviv Oblast, Ukraine Address - Derzhavnyj Arkhiv Lvivskoji Oblasti Lviv vul. Pidvalna 13 Director: Vlecheslav Kuchynba Asst Director: Vera Potapova UA - 79008 E-Mail Address dalo@mail.lviv.ua Make archival inquiry as simple as possible!!! Identify yourself as Grandson doing Genealogical Search. Provide the basic info re Grandfather. Include date of birth, place of birth (as it is now> Zubiv Mist, Kamenka-Buzkij Raion, Lvivska Oblast), all patronymics w/Great Grandmother's maiden name if available. Here you can get a general idea of Great Grandparents' years of birth from Grandfather. You want to be as helpful as you can to the archivist. Ask for a copy of Grandfather's birth certificate and all details re his parents and names of his siblings. Using paragraphs for each part of request (as I have set) will make your request clear to the archivist. There is no prepayment! The Archives will do a preliminary search. They will notify you in general terms, as to what info is available. Correspondence w/you will be in Ukrainian. If you want to keep everything a surprise for Grandfather, I can help you w/any translation. The Archives will also present you with the cost of search, which will include the cost of copies. (Copiers are a treasure in Ukraine.) You will also get their foreign funds transfer number. You can handle this thru your own bank. The average cost per surname search is about $50 American. This of course if subject to change. It also depends on how complex the search is. Once they receive your payment, it takes about 2-3 weeks before you get all copies of documents. With archival inquiry include 2 IRC's!!! ________________________________ Once you have these documents you can then proceed with further research thru Mormon Genealogical Church, which has Church Records (vital & marriage) for Zubiv Mist which will predate your Great Grandparents. In most cases records go back to early 1600's. LDS/Mormon Family Research Centers are conveniently located in most Western Countries. These records are on film and have to be viewed on microfiche. You order the records and then make an appt for viewing. These are available at nominal cost. Your Grandfather can help polish up your basic Cyrillic skills, because most church records are in Cyrillic. Keep this for your records. You keep me posted as well. OSIJ98@aol.com [Edited by Hannia on 6th November 2001 at 05:45] |

Labaj family
I don't know if this is any help, but there was a Ukrainian family with this name in my town outside of Phila., PA. The name had the j dropped off of it, however. There is still a listing in the phone book.
