Hi All! I am researching my father's family in Western Ukraine. They are the villages of Bolekhov and Dolina in southwest of Lviv, near the village of Stryj (sp?). My father's name is Joseph Sikora, born in 1912 in Bolekhov and his mother was Rosylia Romanowicz born about 1885 in Dolina. Any information would be most appreciated. Thank you. Donna

Bolekhov>Dolynskij Raion/District>Ivano Frankivska Oblast/Region

Bolekhov, village, 49.04N 23.52E, 9.7 miles NW of Dolyna, district town.

Use these links to verify this information for yourself.

JewishGen ShtetlSeeker - Town Search
http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm

Ukraine Town Location Guide
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ukrwgw/ukrainetown.html#step1

If you want a copy of Bolekhov map, bring up the list of towns, click longitude/latitude #'s, when small map comes up, click PRINT VERSION on top. This will provide you with biggest, best version.

Start w/an archival search re father FIRST, requesting all documents, including baptismal & matrimonial. These will provide you with names of siblings etc. It might also verify Grandmother's birthplace & possibly birthday.

Once you get this information re father, you can use it to write the Bolekhov village mayor, and inquire re any surviving relatives in the village. Bolekhov is small enough for you to be able to do this. Know quite a few people that have had success doing this.

I have included latest zip code for archives.

76006, Ivano Frankivsk
vul. Sahaidachnoho, 42A
Derzhavnyi Arkhiv Ivano-Frankivskoi Oblasti
Director Katheryna Mychar
UKRAINA / UKRAINE

Archival searches run about $50 American per Surname search, but always subject to change.

You submit your inquiry with as much information, including dates or time frame, as you might have. There is no prepayment! The Archives does the search for you and then sends you a notifying/billing letter in Ukrainian that gives you a general idea of what they have found and what the cost of the search is. They also provide you with instructions on how to deposit payment in their account. This can be done thru your own local bank. Once payment is rcv'd, it will take approximately two weeks before you get copies of the pertinent documents.

To expedite response, include an 2 IRC's (Intl Response Coupon) with your inquiry. Can be purchased at your local post ofc for nominal price. Using Ukrainian for your inquiry is ideal, however English or German work as well.

Address to Village Mayor:

Ivano Frankivska Oblast
Dolynskij Raion
s. Bolekhov
Holowa Sela
UKRAINA / UKRAINE

PS> Always start archival searches on the ones closest in line to you. Many times oral tradition is not as accurate as we would like. For grandmother I will check to see what might be available thru Mormon Genealogical Church. Will get back to you on that.

There are Church Records available for Dolyna/Dolina thru Mormon Genealogical Library.

Not sure if they might predate Grandmother. Still might be worth while looking at for any ROMANOWICZ ancestors. Some of these church records date back to 17th century.

Dolyna -
FHL Intl Film # 2083584
Volume 201-4A/1352-1359

Dolyna (town) -
FHL Intl Film #2101049
Volume 210-4A/1657-1664

Mormon Genealogical Library
FamilySearch - Family History Library Catalog

PS> These films can be ordered and viewed on microfiche at a convenient Mormon Family Center. Nominal cost!!! All instructions at site. Good Luck!!!

Church records also available for Bolekhov. Bare in mind that these might also predate what you are looking for, but might be helpful with locating SIKORA ancestors, dating back to early 17th century. These have been microfilmed by Mormon Genealogical Library/ LDS from old church records @ the Historical Archives in Lviv.

Bolehkov
Vault Intl Film # 1922815
Volume 201-4A/374-384

PS> Forgot to mention that you want to include 2 IRC's in mayor's letter as well. Economic situation in Ukraine currently pretty grim. These will expedite any response.
