Aside from recent immigration after the breakup of the CCCP, where are there communities of Russian and Ukrainian people in the US?

What local cultural events if any do these people host? Who, what, where, when?

There is very little in the way of Russian community here in Minneapolis StPaul, but I ask because I know so many other major cities have entire districts with Poles, or Italian, or Chinese.

Thanks,

rick

The Third/New Wave immigrants, the recent Ukrainian immigrants, are arriving to an already built in Ukrainian religious, political and cultural infrastructure in the US.

At the turn of the 20th century, the Old Immigration Ukrainians initiated the construction of that infrastructure. They built Ukrainian Orthodox/Catholic Churches in their communities. That was an especially difficult time when prejudice and bigotry against Slavs prevailed. The common label for Ukrainians back then was "Pollacks."

Later the Ukrainian DP's, arriving immediately after WW2, brought with them the great desire to maintain their anti-Communist politics, their language and their culture. Many were educated and intellectuals. They established their own financial institutions. They founded Ukrainian Schools and Ukrainian Organizations, centered around the previously built churches. They brought to life a formal interest in Ukrainian art, literature, music and custom.
