I have been told that both of my grandfathers are from Ukraine, probably Kiev. Their names are Vasilii Bouriachek and Appolinarii Jereley. They went to Russia at the end of 19th century. Vasilii was in the Russian army and Appolinarii was a doctor.

I am interested in finding people with the same surname as my grandparents and possibly discovering relaives.

Would be grateful for any information that may assist.

<They went to Russia at the end of 19th century?>

The Kiev Guberniya belonged to Russia at that time.
Scroll down to bottom and click KIEV GUBERNIYA.

A short read on Ukrainian History will help you with the lay of the land.

PS> Where are you located? Did your Grandfathers emigrate Russia? Do you have any documents at all? What religion did they practice?

Smile Searching for relatives JERELEY and BOURIACHEK

Dear Hannia,
thank you for your reply and suggestions.
My parents left Russia after the Revolution and settled in China. I was born in China. We left China in 1953 following the revolution there, and I have been residing in Australia since that time.

I have no documents relating to my grandparents. The information I have is what my parent told me. I made notes of my discussions with them.

I consulted my notes. According to my information, Appolinarii Jereley was born in Ekaterinoslav. He had a sister called Anastasia and a brother called Ivan. Ivan had a son named Sergeii. I was told that Appolinari worked at Ekaterinolslav hospital prior to leaving Ukraine.

I am very interested in my Ukranian/Russian heritage, but the information I have is very scant.

Goga.

Did a quick check thru for both surnames.

There is an Olga Bouriachek in Belarus, who is an intl dance sport participant and then there is your family in N. South Wales. And none that I could find on this side of the Pacific/Atlantic.

As you well know, your genealogical undertaking is quite complex. Unfortunately you are not only digging thru complex history, but much of the documentation for your search is not digitized.

There are several things that I was able to ascertain for you.

The Russian State Military Archives in Moscow is the only archive holding all tsarist army pre 1917 materials.

Any idea what Grandfather Vasili's regiment was? Was he an ofcer? If he lived in Ekaterinoslav just prior to Revolution, by some chance did he belong to the 4th Ekaterinoslav Dragoon Regiment? This was the tsar's honour guard.

Also looked around to gather information re medical educations available at the time in the Kiev area. Kiev University and the Kiev Medical Institute would have most likely been the places where Grandfather Appolinari would have gotten his education. Both the Institute and the University might have student archives. Haven't look for medical institutions in Ekaterinoslav/now Dniepropetrovsk yet.

Your handicap in all of this is that you have no accurate dates.

I suggest that you start with trying to document your parents. Do you have any papers for them? Did you immigrate to Australia with your parents? Australian migrant information is quite detailed and the Natl Archives is digitized! Did your father participate in the govt assisted work program in exchange for immigration sponsorship. Your parents had to fill out extensive questionnaires. You may very well be able to fill a lot of the blanks there for yourself.

My suggestion is start w/the Australian Natl Archives and see what you can find out about both parents.

PS> All genealogical searches take patience, but yours calls for exceptional patience. Once you establish parents' exact place of birth & birthday, you will do an Archival search in Ukraine, which will provide you with other details to fill in more of the the blanks in your ancestral history. If you have Cyrillic font downloaded, try to do a Telephone White Pages search for both surnames in both Dnipropetrovsk and Kiev. I will leave it up to you to find appropriate links for telephone info among all these others, some of which you might find very interesting.

Smile searching for relatives BOURIACHEK/JERELEY

Dear Hannia,
thank you for your prompt reply. Your extensive knowledge is greatly appreciated. I shall follow your advice.

My mother was born in Amurskaya Oblast. I am not sure where my father was born, He may have been born in Nankin China.

Grandfather Vasilii was an officer in the Russian Army. He served in Port Arthur and died in Nikols-Ussuriisk prior to the revolution I have not been able to find Nikols-Ussuriisk on the internet. I am not sure which part of Ukraine he came from, but was told that he was most likely born in Kiev. Regretfully, this information was obtained second hand some years after my father's death.

Once again, thank you very much for your help.

Goga
