I'm looking for any ANYWHERE in the Ukraine. If anyone can help it would be much appreceated. I've had little luck finding anything on the Web as to my family backround.
I know that there is a line of Grotsky's in Poland but i think i need info on the ones in the Ukraine. I know my branch came over rather early (before 1915).
Thanks for the time,
Chad

Grotsky/Grodsky from Ukraine?

Where did they immigrate?

According to Avotaynu, the GROTSKY surname shows up in databases for both Poland and Belarus. Not only should you not negate transliteration variation of Grot/sky/ski/skij, but also check out GRODSKY transliterations variations as well. Bare in mind that the only correct spelling of the surname occurs in its original language, using its original alphabet.

PS> Ukraine prior to 1915 was broken up into Galicia/Austro-Hungarian Empire (which included a big chunk of current Poland) and the Russian Empire.

Checked Ellis Island to get a feel for where other Grotsky/Grodsky's came from in now Ukraine...

See some from Odessa, others from Dzhaga-kulchuk,Crimean area.

In order to make an accurate connection, you need to locate first Grotsky's immigration documentation. There are no short cuts! Today there are about 50 million people in Ukraine and many areas still don't have Telephone White Pages.

Hi,
I read your posting by chance just browsing the web. I was born in Korsun-Shevchenkovsky/Cherkassy region, Ukraine. Iwas told by my dad, Anatoly Grodsky, who, in turn, was told by his father, Solomon Grodsky, about our relatives that left Ukraine for USA in early 20-th century. Too much time has gone since then...

Digging is all it will take.

Archives in Ukraine are free to natives.

Senya, consider putting togther a list of siblings and extended family for Solomon. Start w/Cherkasska Oblast Archives and remember to work BACKWARDS in time.

There are no shortcuts.

Then research THE KIEV JEWISH EMIGRATION SOCIETY
documents on the Jewish emigration from the State Archive of Kiev fonds.

There may also be emigration records @Cherkasska Oblast Archives or at Korsun RAHS/District Level Archives???
