Searching the name Finenko in Ukraine

We are family in the US searching for ancestors with the name of Finenko. We believe that my great grandparents left the Ukraine, in the area of Volynia and in the early 1900's and settled in Massachusettes. Any info or leads would be appreciated. Please email BnKrye@aol.com in English

Are you related to the Makar Finenko family from Haverhill, Mass?

If so then your family was from Poninka, Wolyn.

Ellis Island Records show Anelle & Nikitin Finenko w/baby Iwan from Poninka, Wolyn, arriving in NY in 1907. They list Makar as brother and their destination in States. They also list Mrs. Orodokia? Finenko and a Mrs. Marianna G/Labrowsky as relatives left behind at home, in Poninka. Assume that these ladies are the mothers of Anelle and Nikitin.

Did a quick look and see that village Poninka still exists. Located 50.1833N-27.5333E, 132.7 miles West of Kiev.

If you are interested in doing an Archival search, you will need to establish Raion and Oblast. Previous link will provide how-to instructions.

Some Vohlyn/Wolyn Church Records are still being compiled by Mormon Genealogical Library. Many of these records were destroyed during WW2. Best to try for an Oblast Archive inquiry. Although the link suggests that you use Ukrainian, English will work as well. In order to make the inquiry, you need to have at least a yr of birth, if not the exact birth date. Patronymic (given name of parents) information would also help. Archival inquiries run about $50 American per surname search.

Poninka is a small village. You might consider writing the village mayor and inquiring re any surviving relatives still in the village. Info on previous link.
