My last name is Socolinsky, but my grandfather's surname was Sokolinsky. He was born at 11/25/1883 near Kiev, and he came to Argentina on 1905 with my grandmother.
My grandmother's surname was Moguilevsky, and she was born at Ekaterinoslav at 05/20/1884. I would like to found people with similar surnames and similar origins. I'm looking for relatives. Thanks. |

My husband's grandfather was Wasyl/Wasil Sokoloski/Sokolsky before officials at Ellis Island changed it. We have only the memory of his aunt to go on for the pronounciation, to take a guess at the spelling. It's begining to look more and more as if he came from the Ukraine, rather than "Russia". His route to the US was through the Carpathains, into Austia/Hungary, then the US. I believe he arrived with a brother, Stefan in 1904. They were headed to Taylor, PA, US to another brother, Josef.
At this point, I'm not even sure if I have the RIGHT Wasyl! I have been posting on the Russia Boards for a couple of years now and there is a gentleman there who is part of a program who will trace your ancestors, free of charge. His postings are under "wait for me". Since you have the towns, you might see if he can help or perhaps the the site on Carpatheo~Rysun research. There are folks there helping those who DO have towns. Chatsol |

Ricardo, it's been MANY years since I practiced reading in Spainish, but if I'm reading your message correctly, you are saying that you too have the surname of Sokol?
Sorry, I'll print out your message and take it to work with me to get a proper translation and response. Cat |

Just thought I'd share this. While surfing the web last night, looking for some help on Ukrainian/Belarus genealogy, I came across the following site. The webmaster(s) seem to be VERY knowledgable about the history of the Ukraine and to have some rare resources. I have bookmarked it for myslef and thought I'd share with those of you reasearching the Ukraine.
http://www.feefhs.org/by/frg-zbs.html I attempted sending an e-mail to the webmaster, but there is something wrong with the address, the message was returned, so I will have to send my message through good, old fashioned "snail mail"! Cat |
