Hi... I was born here in the United states. My name is Paul Melniczenko, my father changed it from Melnyczenko... don't know why. I have never met another with my name except in my immediate family. My grandparents came here from Germany in the late 40's eairly 50's. I am looking for anyone with the same last name or if you know someone with the name. E-mail me please. Thanks.

MELNICZENKO/MELNICHENKO/MELNYCZENKO/MELNYCHENKO
The surnames listed on top are most likely all members of the same clan, if not the same family in some cases.
If you go thru the Telephone White Pages on this side of the Atlantic, you will find many with your same surname, just spelled differently. It's the same surname...in Cyrillic! There is no correct spelling of the surname in English! THE ONLY CORRECT SPELLING OF THE SURNAME IS IN IT'S ORIGINAL LANGUAGE...AND IT'S ORIGINAL ALPHABET, WHICH IS CYRILLIC. It was the individual transliterator (immigration authority who transliterated the surname from Cyrillic to Latin Alphabet) and his language ear, that created the spelling in English. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Translating and Transliterating are distinctly two different things. TO TRANSLITERATE - To represent/spell the sound of the word, using the alphabet of another language. TO TRANSLATE - To express in another language, retaining the original meaning of the word. _____________________________________________________________________________________ PS> This is not meant as a lecture. I just don't want you two to be lonely and think there is no extended family. There are lots of members of your clan located in USA & Canada, some of which might even be direct family. And with a little effort you might also find surviving relatives in Ukraine as well. |

Melnychenko = son of miller (Melnyk) or young assistant of miller.
In a telephone directory of Kremenchuk,Poltava region (www.dzsoft.com/kremenchuk) there are nine surnames Melnychenko. The surnames with the radical Melnyk (Miller) are very much wide-spread. I had two colleagues Melnyk and two Melnychuk. |
