Hannia, I am so sorry. Since you were in NYC I should have told you to go a Ukrainian butcher store that we have been going to for decades. It's called Baczynsky's East Village Meat Market on 2nd Avenue between 8th and 9th streets. Excellent place for kobasa, babka, shiska (if you dare) everything you can imagine.
I now live in New Jersey.
It's no wonder I can't get any records of my grandfather, sounds like there aren't any. LDS has marriage records only till late 1907 for Lesivka.
Thanks everyone, Maria

Marijka.

The old man, Julian Baczynsky, can still be found there, chatting it up w/one elder or another. I live closer to the Hudson River, but still try getting over there once a month.

You know that the recent huge gas explosion in NYC was only a block away? George Pasternak, former manager at Orchidia (formerly corner of 9th St), owned one of those buildings that collapsed.

PS> Don't fret too much and don't give up. Something will turn up.

I know about the fire. My mother and her friends were playing bingo 2 blocks away in the Samopovich Bank when it happened, but the crazy old babas kept playing. I'll ask her about Pasternak, I went to school (St. George) with a Pasternak. He was a class or two behind me. I thought you lived in Canada. Maria

No, this Pasternak would likely be in his early seventies today.

I graduated St. George's before the new school was built.

Wait a minute. My brother, sister and I all went to St. George. My brother and I went to the High School but not my sister, the High School was not there. She went to Cathedral. Are you saying you went to St. George Elementary? We should talk some more.

The original St. George's School was on E. 9th off Ave C. It had once been a public school. The parish rented the space and set up their original school there. Most of us were DP and spoke no English. Since some of the teachers were Ukrainian, that facilitated the learning of the new language.

BTW the original, turn of the century St. George's Church was on 21st, off of 1st Ave.

Oh yes, St. Brigid. The old CYM building was on 10th between A and B. I'm from 10th between 1st and A. Although it was tough, it was still a great place to grow up. Maria
