Grandmother

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here and I'm hoping someone can give me some information. My grandmother was born in Belogorodka, Ukraine in 1895. She came to America/ Ellis Island, New York in 1913 at the age of 17. Her name was Vasilisa Gress (or Gres?). I know she had a brother that was there when she left. She also had two brothers that were deceased. One brother named Henry and another named Pete. I don't know the name of her third brother. She had a sister by the name of Justine (not sure of the spelling) who came to America also, but I don't know what year. She also had a nephew. I found her ship and manifest, but I am looking for other relatives . She stayed in America for the remainder of her life. If someone could please tell me where to look for birth records, I would so appreciate it. I don't know where to go or agency to contact. Thank you so much.

Hannia will become famous soon enough
Belogorodka, Ukraine in 1895 would have been Czarist Russia in that time frame However there were two such place names, one was in what was the Vohlynskaya gubernia/region (today Khmelnytska oblast/region) and the other was in Kyevskaya gubernia.

What religion did she practice and do you have any idea what her ethnicity was?

Re Ellis Island, did you examine ship manifest?

Thank you so much for answering.....I did get the manifest and it shows Belogorodka Russia. On my research, I see it's listed at times as Kiev Belogorodka Ukraine, so I'm confused. The manifest says Cath. Orthidox. (I think). It's handwritten and hard to read. The port she left out of was Libau, which I believe is Latvia? She said there were many jews in her village.

I suspect her given name to be Wasylina. Did she settle in Chicago after immigration?

Also, according to her passport, they spelled her name wrong on the manifest. Her passport (handwritten of course) shows Vasilisa Gress' and the manifest shows Wasolisa Gres. I know she was illiterate, so I don't believe she would have known if it were spelled wrong. I don't know if she would have had a birth record also?
