Post 1870 metrykal materials may very well be in Lviv Archives???

Viktor_Lviv, one of our native researchers, shares a similar backgd to yours. His family had been displaced from the border region. His rates are fair and he can expedite getting you over the proverbial walls. He has full access to Lviv Archives, both historical and oblast.

Thank you for the link to Victor. I will definitely keep his information so that I can get access to more recent documents, once I have a better sense of both the Washuta and Nestor sides (villages, etc.). ...if possible.

Question I've been knocking around with folks in another Ukraine genealogy group--my ggm's given name was Marcella, per several records here and what all family member said. It seems like an odd given name for the area (both for Galicia and Ukraine proper). I would guess it would have been pronounced Martsela, just going off of how it was spelled; not sure what to make of the name honestly. It is different that nearly everyone else on that side of the family (the rest of the family members take very common names like John, Julia, Mary, Stanislav, etc.). What's your take on it, given your knowledge of the language and culture? I had a second major in Russian language and studies and have studied Rusyn language and culture for years, but I am by no means a knowledgeable person on incidence of more rare given names there.

It has been my exp that Marcella is a Polish given name. Male version was/is Marcel. It was not uncommon among ethnic Poles in Galicia. Galicia was not a homogeneous province. There was a fair amt of intermarriage between colonial Poles, Belarusyn and Ruthenians.

That was a hunch of mine; I saw online that there was a Polish version of Marcella and thought maybe that was the only connection. Thanks for your thoughts on this one. I posted it elsewhere and hadn't seen any thoughts on it as of yet.

On Ancestry, you can actually do a search for GGrandmother Marcela by using only her given name. It is unusual enough. It is also helpful to include the general area of emigration, like Galicia or Austria.

I have done that in the past, hoping to find something, but it was always with the double L spelling. I will definitely take a peek at that again tonight. Good idea. Wish Ellis Island had that option!
