My Mother's maiden name was Kapitan. As far as I know her grand-parents came from eastern Europe. They settled in southern Manitoba (Canada). Her grandfathers name was Fred. I don't know if his name got changed when he came to Canada or not. I just know that from looking on the net, Kapitan is not too common of a name. Good Luck!

kapitan
Colleen,
It is crucial to your search to ascertain exact place of birth. This link might help you do this. LI-RA-MA Russian Consular Collection http://www.archives.ca/02/02020203_e.html#lirama Once you have a place of birth you can then trace your lineage thru Regional/Oblast Archives. Depending on the size of village, you might even consider writing village mayor and inquiring re any surviving relatives. Your inquiry to village mayor must include birth date, patronymics and appx time of emigration. |

Colleen,
If the Russian Consular Records don't hold the answers for you, try looking thru the Form 30A Records. NA-Immigration-Immigration Form 30A Ocean Arrivals 1919-1924 http://www.archives.ca/02/020202/020202040101_e.html Don't be surprised if you find that the surname Kapitan is of Germanic extraction... Good Luck w/the Archives. [Edited by Hannia on 11th October 2001 at 12:46] |

Kapitan grandchild
My grandfather's name was Wasyl Kapitan. He immigrated from Dzwinagrod, Galicia in 1911. His Ellis Island record lists his ethnicity as Ruthenian. He settled in Fall River Massachusetts. He married there and had three children but both sons had no children so I don't know of any other Kapitan relatives.
I have a picture of him wearing a uniform and was told he was in the Prussian Army. I also have several books he used to teach other immigrants English. He made his living as a shoe repairman. The ship manifest shows that he had a "sponser" in Fall River but the surname is difficult to read. I believe it is Bistova or Bistovic. I don't know if any of this helps you or not- good luck to you. |
