Imperial Russian Army Conscripts and Officers
How would one even begin to look for documentation on conscripts and officers from around the 187-s to 188-s? My great grandfather Jacob Heine was a conscript out of the German village of Kloestitz, and my great grand aunt Katharine Huber married a Russian officer (?) named Michael Alisenov or Alisonow (a transliteration by a German researcher) in the German colony of Zurichtal, near Freodosia. I'd like to find at least one bit of solid evidence that these men were in the military, since I was myself in the U.S. Navy.

One place to start would be to look for the military muster lists. I don't kow where they are stored for the Russian army, but the Austro-Hungarian military muster lists should be in the Vienna state archives.
Take a look at this site: Slovakia Genealogy Research Strategies It refers to the Austr-Hungarian empire but it may provide you with a few clues to start your search. Catherine |
