Pavlokoma victims
Hi I'm trying to obtain any information on the KOLASA family. My grandfather Myhailo was one of the 366 Ukrainian victims at Pavlokoma in 1945. My father Josef never spoke of the tragedy and has since passed away leaving little or no information to go on . My father had two sisters ,Sofia and kateryna, the latter also a pavlokoma victim.
Can anyone please help me with any information or how to go about getting that information as I have seen reading some of the forums info on births/deaths and marriages may be difficult to obtain.? |

Key to getting records is knowing what village your gf was born. LDS (Latter Day Saints church) has microfilmed thousands of records around the world including Ukraine. Catholic priests were required to submit records to the governemnt of births, marriages and deaths since about mid 1700's. Problem is records are missing or their could be gaps in the records (missing years). Once you have the village you can go to their webiste and order the film to view at a local "Family History Center". The fee to order is nominal (I piad $6 in Canada per film). You can go to the LDS website www.familysearch.org and look around. Keep in mind that village names have changed and your particular village could be listed under another name (some villages I researched were catelog under the Polish name for the village and the site does not cross reference). Also keep in mind that many villages have the same name (I have read about 8 or more villages with the same name) so be sure you have the correct one.
Depending on when gf was born those records may not be filmed (I find most microfilms go only to turn of the century) and so your next option would be to hire a researcher which I have done on two seperate occassions. If you would like more info on that let me know. If you do not know where gf was born there are ways to research that as well. Ships manifests (for surviving family that immigrated), naturalization papers of the country they went to etc. may hold valuable information for you Sandra |

Hi Jr Welcome to this forum. There are several ways to spell Pavlokoma: Polish – w slash l Pawłokoma Ukrainian – Transliterated Pavlokoma Ukrainian - Cyrillic Павлокома English Pawlokoma I suggest you copy & paste the various spelling in to your search engine and use the translation functions whenever a different language is used. There are hundreds of sites that relate to Pavlokoma, including several on YouTube. There were 5 Kolasa family members kill on 3 March 1945. The names on the Pavlokoma memorial are: Mykhailo Kolasa born 14 Oct 1872 Katerina Kolasa born 27 Sep 1910 Stefan Kolasa born 28 Apr 1863 Katerina Kolasa born 30 May 1876 Andri Kolasa born 15 Jan 1904 I do not believe that you will find any FHC films that relate to Pavlokoma. It is woth searching the site for individual names however. There are several Kolasa names to be found on the various ship manifest records. Be sure to search Baltimore and Philadelphia as well as Ellis Island. Also try different spellings. There are a few Rolasa and Holasa names that will be of interest on the Ellis Island and Ancestry sites. Where did your ancestors settle when they arrived? Was it Perth Amboy, Pittsburgh, McKees Rocks, Chicago, Mich etc? Please send me a private note. I would like to talk to further about Pavlokoma immigrants. Tempo |

Hi Tempo
Many thanks for the information you have given me about the 5 Kolasa's as this is the area I wish to begin my search. I was aware of 3 of the Kolasa family but not Stefan & Andri.and info on births/deaths and marriages may be difficult to obtain. Unfortunately my side of the Kolasa family emigrated to Australia in 1949 and moved from Melbourne to Sydney. Please excuse my ignorance as I am not very good at finding my way around computers and the internet,so your information is most gratifying and appreciated. |

Hi Jr123
The Australian National Archive database lists the following Kolasa surnames. Most or all came in the late 1940s-1950s. Your relatives are likely among those who arrived in that time period. No doubt your family were involved in the Akcja Wisla Operation that began April 1947. If your parents were considered Displaced Persons there may be records of their stay in a DP camp. Surname First Nationality Birthday Arrival Date Kolasa Katarzyna Polish 15 9 1965 Melbourne Kolasa Mieczyslaw 1 6 1922 Kolasa Kazimierz 1 3 1922 Kolasa Alfons 12 1 1917 Kolasa Stefania 1 8 1921 Kolasa Zofia 19 6 1947 Kolasa Katarina 14 4 1914 Kolasa Jozef 15 8 1916 Kolasa Katrona 3 1 1927 Kolasa Walentin 28 12 1945 Kolasa Wladislaus 28 4 1948 Kolasa Piotr 19 4 1913 Kolasa Czeslaw 24 12 1924 Kolasa Hannelore 25 10 1928 Kolasa Bernhard 9 9 1948 Kolasa Wladyslaw 8 15 1915 Kolasa Ewdokia 14 10 1927 Kolasa Tadeusz 12 5 1947 Kolasa Richard 22 4 1949 Kolasa Szezepan 7 4 1931 Please let me know if you recognize any of the names on the list who are individuals from Pavlokoma.
