Ihor has an excellent suggestion. I have found a few relatives when people went door knocking for me in Ukraine! Ihor found a cousin for me and I have had help from others in locating family. The thing is people may not know their genealogy. The cousin Ihor found had no idea what his grandmother's maiden was (my Grandfather's sister) and therefore no idea he would even be related to me. Ihor did some geneaolgy research first (in records not yet filmed or indexed by the LDS) so that he could "prove" our relation to each other. Had I just shown up to the village I would never had found him (my search was specifically for finding my Grandather's sister's family). From research I did I realized that there were MANY families in the village with my name (some would be related more closely to me, other's not). Had I just shown up and asked for people with that name. . well it wouldn't mean anything unless we coudl prove our connection. Of course, this also depends how long ago it was that your family left the village. My family left over 100 years ago so there would be no one living who would have known my family that lived there. If your family left later.. perhaps there are people still living who will remember.

I am travelling to Ukraine in May to Sniatyn region very close to Horodenka. I am travelling to meet my Aunt who I helped trace thanks to Sylvie and Hannia from this forum.

I wish you the best of luck in your search.

My grandparents left in 1906 and 1912 so not likely anyone would remember them unless there are historical accounts or records.Where did he find records not yet filmed or indexed?

Ihor has special access to local registry offices. I had traced my family as much as I could through film at LDS. Ihor took to from there and traced them forward for me and then went door knocking and found my cousin.

I plan on going to Ukraine next year and meet him in person!

jsquarek,

My father immigrated to Canada in 1905. When I arrived at one of my cousin's house in 1996, she knew that my father Mykola immigrated to Canada. Maria was at that time 80 years old and passed away summer of 2010. Her younger sisters also knew of my father.

When in Ukraine, many folks approach me, asking about their ancestors in Canada. If you have living relatives in the village, they will know of your grandparents!!

Jaseniv Pilnyi is in the same area as my father’s village. I can give you phone numbers for the Shkvarok (Ukr.); Szkwarok (Pol.) and Karpiak.

p.s. According to the phone directory, the population of Jaseniv Pilnyi is 3248.
