Beverly,

Here are the Russian words for white church and white steeple- белый шпиль белая церковь. I picked the spelling of Bielschowsky because most of the other spellings did not have hits in Google or Ancestry.com.

"I was told that the name meant white church or white steeple....would that change anything? "
Yes, the stem "biel" has the meaning of "white" but I see nothing connected with church/steeple here.
Who told you that?
I've been thinking about it.. You see, there's letter "k" in 4 of the variants you had provided, so the surname Беляковский (pronounced /bieliakovskij/) with "k" instead of "h" makes sense too and it's much more common than the first one. It means the descendant of Bielak, somebody who is white.

Regards,
Andriy

Hi

Suggest you get on the Stephen P. Morse 1 Step site- Ellis island -gold and search as follows:

1. In the name box try various combinations using only the first 4-5 letters. Example: Bilachikovsky, Bilachowsky, Bilitokofsky, Beliterkofsky, Bilitakofsky, Bilaskofsky and Bilachovsky. I think you will not find much with the lis you made. Then try Bielachowski (the Polish way of spelling) makes most sense.

2. Try inserting the town name only. Examples: Moshna Cherkassy Kiev.

Many times there are different endings on the words. Using wild cards will often pick up ones that would otherwise not show.

Were there any friends that came over with your ancestors, try searching their names also.

Good luck

Tempo

Thank you Tempo. My grandmother and her siblings left what was then simply called Russia, having already married. Therefore, they did not immigrate using their maiden name. Another problem that I have is that I can not find any incoming information about the one sister who went to England. I know of no way to find information about the passsenger lists for ships coming from Europe to England in the early 1900's. Do you have any suggestions?

As far as friends, I do not know of any friends who came over with them...They are just names on a passenger list...

Thanks again,
Beverly

Try ancestry.com (or ancestry.uk) etc. to search for ships manifest to England. Phone your local library and see if they have free access to ancestry. That is where I go and save myself the $$ from having to join. Tempo can you provide the link the site you mentioned? I have seen it before but cannot find in my 100's of links I have saved.

Tempo is correct when researching you have to try various spellings of the name. I have even gone manifest by manifest in search of family because mistakes are made by the people transcribing them for the internet. "I" (capital i) was transcribed as "T" along with several other letters in the name done wrong. I have searched names interchaning i, l , t etc. If letters look similiar when hand written you may want to try them as well.

If you have a time frame of travel you might just have to search ship by ship (long and tedious).

Good Luck,

Sandra

The Stephen P. Morse site is a very powerful tool once you get the hang of it:

One-Step Webpages by Stephen P. Morse

You can access Ellis Island thru his site if you are a member of EI. You must be a member of Ancestry if you want to look at Baltimore/Philly etc. manifest records.

If you know the ship or village or dates this site is very handy to use. There are other programs on the Morse menu that also come in handy.

Good luck

The Ancestry information DOES NOT contain passenger lists to the U.K exclusively. They only have passengers en route to the U.S. (who may stop in U.K.) or the the U.K from ports outside of Europe ie South America and Asia. I called Ancestry and their catalogue does not contain what I am looking for. Any suggestions?
