looking for ancestors from Sudova Vyshnia (Ukrainian: Судова Вишня, Polish: Sądowa Wi
Hi, I'm from USA (in NYState), my father's family came from: Sudova Vyshnia (Ukrainian: Судова Вишня, Polish: Sądowa Wisznia) near Lviv and I'm seeking any assistance in finding anything about any of them. His last name was "Bank", he came to the USA around 1920. Most of his brothers and sister and parents came a few years later. He had uncles who came here earlier (probably in the 1880s).
He told me that one of his uncles was a leading wheat dealer in the town and died in fire with his wife. Some relatives stayed and the Nazis killed them all. We are Jewish. Can anyone assist me in finding out more about them??? Thank you ABanks Last edited by ABanks; 6th January 2012 at 14:20. Reason: misspelling |

I just posted in the last week or so about some info for research on Jewish heritage. If you search "jewish genealogy" on this site you will see other threads in this forum with information on various websites etc. Sadly, I dont' think there are as many Jewish records as their are Greek Catholic or roman catholic but you should be able to find more info to help you with your search.

I would seriously consider applying for your relatives' Alien-Files. I have found a relatives birth certificate from the communist era that I cannot get from Kiev archives. Can you give us more information on your relatives? A-Files are available through three programs, based on year of birth and arrival in the USA
I have written about the value of these files on my blog- Seven months worth waiting | Find Lost Russian & Ukrainian Family Documents that open doors to information | Find Lost Russian & Ukrainian Family |

veramiller, thank you for responding....I doubt any communist record would help...my relatives either came to the US before WWII or any still there were killed by the Nazis.
Jiggy, thank you for your suggestion, I will follow up |

ABAnks,
I think you misunderstood Vera. I believe she means records from the time period during the communist era. . not actual communist records. The Alien Files she is talking about are USA records of immigration to the USA and could provide you with valuable information. So many records are lost or destroyed in Ukraine. You may find more info in the USA than Ukraine. The records can also give you names of villages, relatives etc. Also, naturalization papers (or US equivalent - I am in Canada) can provide tons of info too. Sandra |

On the top of this page you will see a box (right side) that says "search this site". Type in "jewish genealogy" (or something similiar) and a bunch of links will come up to previous posts from other people who asked about Jewish ancestry. You can review them. I know some of them included info on websites and other organizations that people were referred to from others that answered their questions. Those might give other leads as to where you can find records or information as to where else to look.
Hope that helps. Sandra |
