Hi Ron,

It would be a good idea to send your letter of inquiry directly to Ivanijchuk Lubomyr - Prutivka village major and see what happens next.
Just copy the address below and put it on the envelope:

¶×ÁΦÊÞÕË ìÀÂÏÍÉÒ ÷ÁÓÉÌØÏ×ÉÞ
ó¦ÌØÓØËÁ ÒÁÄÁ
Ó. ðÒÕÔ¦×ËÁ
óÎÑÔÉÎÓØËÉÊ ÒÁÊÏÎ
¶×ÁÎÏ-æÒÁÎ˦×ÓØËÁ ÏÂÌÁÓÔØ
Ukraine 78348

It will be a big event in the village and all the people with Berkosha surname will know about it.
I bet you'll get the feedback.

Regards,
Andriy

Success in Prutivka!

Andriy
Your help did it! We are in regular email contact with a relative in Prutivka. Thank you so much!
I’m looking for relatives in Velykyj Kucuriv (Kuczurmare) where my maternal grandfather Ivan Kowalski (Covalschi), son of Petro and Anna Bille, was born 1888. His son Michail was born in 1912. Ivan was married at that tome to Domnica Tivilic, daughter of Georgi. Ivan came to Canada alone in April 1912 and had to wait until the war was over to send for his son Michail in 1922. Michail’s godparent was Eufrosinia Craucinc and the midwife was Eudochia Uihalcean (?). The baptizing priest was Gauriil Hrainul (?). I don’t know what happened to Domnica Tivilic. Was she lost in the war but her son Michail survived as an orphan? Do you have any information that might help find out if there are any relatives still living in the area?

Thank You Again!
Ron

Ron,

I'm really glad you did it!
Unfortunately, I see no people with Kovalski surname there. Still, it does not mean there aren't any. It can be checked by either doing the research in the village (I can do it for you) or finding someone local on the forum to help you. There are 3500 people in Velykyj Kocuriv and I think you will not be able to find people the way you did in Prutivka with the information you provided in the previous post.
You should check marriage records (if Dominika survived, she most probably got married and changed her surname) and death records on Kuczumare. Was teh family Orthodox? Have you already seen these:

Kovalski is not a name in Ukraine, is it? Could it be Kovalevsky (ëÏ×ÁÌÅ×ÓØËÉÊ)?

Found one individual in Velykyi Kurchuriv -
ëï÷áìå÷óøëéê íéëïìáê çòéçïòøå÷éþ ÷åìéëéê ëõþõò¶÷

Kovalski

Hello Andriy

Thanks again. Ann, our contact in Prutivka, has visited the St Nicholas church and found further information on Berkoshas. I assume that would be the orthodox church that has the metrical books mentioned in your earlier post. I do have the info on the metrical books for Kuczurmare and we may have to go that way. Ivan Kowalski spoke both Ukrainian and Rumanian, I believe (living close to the border), but that doesn't really explain his "Polish" name. The Tivilic name isn't really Ukrainian either, is it? More mystery.
I looked at your web site and I like what I read, so we may talk more about your research possibilities in the future

Thanks
Ron

Tivilic = Tivilik or Tyvylyk = ôÉ×ÉÌÉË (Cyrillic). There are many Tivilic living in Velykyi Kurchuriv, Chernivtsi and Sniachiv (Chernivtsi oblast).
