Question Kantymir/Cantemir/Kantimir/Kantemir

Hello, all. This is my first post here as I have just started seriously searching for my extended family in Ukraine. I would welcome any and all suggestions or if I am missing any steps.

Here is the history as I know it. First of all, I am searching for Kantymir/Cantemir/Kantimir/Kantemir in the Bukovina region of Ukraine.

My GG grandfather , Gowrylo Kantymir was born about 1857 in the Bukovina, Kitzman region of Ukraine. He and his wife, Maria Kromaruk, left the Ukraine in April of 1897, along with their 4 children, Sophie, Levan, Semion and Danylo (sp). They arrived in Canada in Halifax on April 30, 1897 then on to Winnipeg, Manitoba and they settled in Stuartburn, Manitoba. Gowrylo passed away shortly after their arrival on April 12, 1907 so he never had the chance to see how his family grew to what is our family today.

Semion was my great grandfather and he had 12 very long-lived children. My grandmother (Mary Kantymir (Stefiuk)) was 7 months short of 100 when she passed and her mother, Maria lived well past 100 years.

However, time is passing and my aunt and I would like to undertake a “quest” to Ukraine to meet relatives that we know must still be there. There are only 3 surviving children of Semion and Maria’s and it would be lovely to be able to provide this info to them. I know we will be responsible to squeeze every drop of info from our trip and relay it to the family back home in Canada. On July 1, 2012, we will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the old homestead built by Semion, Maria and the resulting families. This old homestead is still in the family today and it would be most fitting to present our findings and new relatives at this celebration, if we can find our “rellies” in Ukraine soon enough.

If there is anyone who knows of this family before they left Ukraine, I would really appreciate that information. I need to know the name of the village where they came from before I can find anyone back there.

I am also looking for my grandfather’s family (Stefiuk) from the Kitzman area but I will post that request for info separately.

Hi there JRucker,

Unfortunately I don't have any information on the exact location of their village in Bukovina, all I have is Kitsman as well. I have local history book called As the Carrot Flows, page 343-44. My connection to the Kantymir family is through Danylo (Dan). He married a Frozina (not sure if there's a variation here, just going by the book's info) Sherban, and Frozina is related by marriage to the Niwranski (Nivryans'kyy) family from Horoshova, Ukraine. The book says that Dan and Frozina had 10 children, 6 of who died young. It says that Frozina came and worked for one of her aunts Mrs. Steve Cureatz (her aunt being Teckla Niwranski, my great grandmother).

So that's my connection to the Kantymir family. I'd love to know more and share whatever relevant info I have, most of which has been posted to you above.

Thanks and good luck with your search, and hopefully you find everything out in time so that you'll have be able to take an amazing trip to Ukraine.

Steve

Hi Stephen, thanks for the response. I think you are just the person I need to talk to. Is there any way I can contact you by personal email or telephone? My email is jeanne_rucker@hotmail.com. I would really appreciate a reply as you can fill in many empty boxes on my tree.

Hey Jeane, not sure how many holes I can fill on the tree but I'm willing to give it a shot. I'll send you an email tonight when I come home from work. Have a great day!

Awesome Hi all I am also a long distant relative. Semion is my 2nd great grandfather, all i know is his mother is from Russia i think i could be wrong and ya Semion Birth 21 Sept 1884 in Kitsman(К╕цмань), Ukraine (Austria at the time). Kitsman is a town/villgae it is in the Chernivets'ka oblast which is present day " Northern Bukovina " Bukovina is a region North is Chernivets'ka oblast and Souther is Romanian Bucovina. I think i could be wrong Also Maria Kromaruk father Ivon Hrenyk is from Khlivyshche(Хл╕вище), Chernivets'ka oblast, Ukraine Which is also in Bukovina and near Kitsman i dunno if that helps but I would also really like to know if we still have living relatives in Ukraine.
Also when i google map all the locations givien I can see them all when i zoom in farily close being Kitsman in the center Khlivyshche to the west a little and Horoshova to the east a little.

kantymir, hrenyk

hi mickel, i noticed on your post you said that maria kromiuk's father was ivon hrenyk. this is incorrect. semion married married maria hrenyk, father ivon. gowryllo kantymir married married maria kromiuk, and we do not know her maiden name. linda cousins
