Can anyone help me? Am looking for any information on my Ukrainian Grandparents who immigrated from Austria when the Ukraine was part of Austria. Am not sure when they immigrated, possibly around 1905. My Dido's name was Ivan Melnychuk (Melnyk) born 1887 & Baba's name was Matrona Zariovna born 1889.I know they were living in or around Sault Ste Marie, Ontario in 1912 when my father Michael -possibly Mikhail-was born. That's where he was baptised-St-Ignace parish. They later moved to Oshawa, Ontario. The names of his godparents were Alexander Buzak & Catharina Maliowana.Unfortunately they both died before I was born. No one talked about ancestory back then & now there is no one alive to ask.I do remember that there was correspondence from the " Old Country " when I was a child. I have researched them on ancestor's.ca & 1911 Census with no luck. Seems like they didn't exist.Would appreciate any help.

In Ukraine, surname Melnyk / Melnychuk very common. It is in almost every village. It comes from handicrafts (grind flour in the mill).
In which the village in Ukraine lived the family Melchuk? I recently conducted research family Melnychuk who emigrated to Canada from the village Tsvitova (Buchach District Ternopil region). Igor |

Untitled village further research impossible.
Surname Melnychuk very common. I checked the lists of killed in WWII only 8 districts (out of 17) in the Ternopil region. In 33 villages is Melnychuk. Of course, there Melnychuk in other villages. Surname Matrons probably Zar (pronounced Zarivna). In Ternopil and Lviv region is much Zar. Igor |

Hey,
This record matches the birth year. Says born in "Russia", but racial origin "Ruthenian": - Ancestry.ca If this is the legit passenger records then the arrival is 26 May 1914 in NY, before heading to Montreal. This could explain not being able to find them in the 1911 Census. Here's another possibility, born 1888 from Bukovina: - Ancestry.ca Arrival 22 May 1910 headed to Parry Sound which is on the way to Sault Ste. Marie. This is the baptism record you're talking about correct?: - Ancestry.ca John Melnik in Algoma 1911 Census: 1911 Census of Canada @ Automated Genealogy Anyhow, it's tough searching with minimal details. Once the 1921 Census comes out it may help with location. Did Ivan have any other children? Do you have an idea when he died? The more details you can share the better. Sorry wasn't much help, but eager to help if I can. Stephen |
